Just looking for you thoughts on this

Mare never been lame ridden on the Monday 22nd by trainer nothing untoward
Mare shod in the morning early Tuesday ex Master farrier slightly quicker than normal - mare schooled in pm and everything seemed fine
One the Wed she had a day off nothing obvious
Thursday I had a lesson with trainer and she was a bit arsy at first not responding , slightly lazy which is is normally anyway by last 15 mins she was better and came down in outline (work in progress)
Friday I lunged her and she was obviously lame on the right rein for about 5 minutes of the 20 minutes and then improved a bit

Saturday we hacked walking fine went to trot and lame so cut short ride and tried a 2nd trot and could hardly see lameness
Saturday night all 4 feet warm

Sunday morn feet only mildly warm turned out am them pm got her in to ride feet cold
on hack did not notice any lameness

Monday trainer rode again and said 2 tenths lame on right rein 1 10ths left

Tuesday am farrier took shoes off said nothing obviously just mildly sensitive on the outside

Thurs vet came nothing visible
no pulse - no heat - no reaction to tendons or hoof testers
no difference with flexion test

1 10ths lame on straight and 3 10ths on the right rein

(have to add she was less lame for the vet than the first lunge when i lunged her the first time on the Friday a week before)
So it is the near fore that is the problem

week off no bute (my choice) re asses this Thursday maybe nerve block and later x ray if needed

horse is in 6 days work no huge amounts of protein or mixes as I wont do that just a tailored diet from D&H of Fibergy and nuts.

Mare is playing around with others bucking and prancing and coming in out comfortably

vet said lami was on the bottom of her list as nothing was pointing to it

Thoughts??

You rode a horse that was lame over 2 or 3 days on the Fri & Sat, couldn't tell if lame or not on the Sunday when hacking, then had farrier out, then vet out.
You wont do a bute trial to determine possible pain issue. Horse still out in field allowed to move freely.

Mention of nerve blocking later in week as horse unlevel on both reins on vet visit.
Me? I'd have been getting to the bottom of it last week when vet came - either/or both bute trial and nerve blocking.

as I said as soon as she showed lameness we rode the 5 mins home and sunday trotted her up no lameness sunday. The friday evening she went lame the surgery was closed (after 5)and could not call till the monday we trotted her up each times on sat and sunday seemed ok

I did not say I could not tell, I said she was not showing lamness which is a huge difference than I could not tell as I had 4 other people who said she was not showing lamness only found out when we got into the woods on rough ground so we came home and sunday she seemed fine.

Discussion with vet that she was so mildly lame we decided not to do bute trial but give her time off work as she had improved from the first day of lamness. Could not do nerve block last week as vet had slotted me in to her call outs and had not the equipment nor the time. Sometimes if sore after shoeing a week off can see them come round.

Too look at the horse outside there was no reason not to turn the horse out and vet had not said anything about no turnout

^^ this, I'm afraid, for me... when my oldie did her check ligament she was very intermittently lame so if there is nothing brewing in the foot I would want to be very very cautious. There was nothing there on palpation for her either. It could be nothing much, but horses don't generally come on/off lame for no reason :(

Yes I just wish she had not gone lame on Friday night after the vets closed as things would have been easier and I agree going back in time I should have called the vet out on the Monday. I was just thinking along the lines that she only was shod 3 days before and had never gone lame before and had only been ridden in the school on Tuesday when she was sound, not ridden wed so no reason to suspect anything, only arsy on Thursday in lesson but no obvious lamness or I would have felt it and trainer seen it. It was only on the Friday evening when I lunged her she was lame for about 2 circuits on the lunge. Sat only lame for about 5 strides and sunday not lame.

Def should have called them Monday but my thoughts were with the shoeing which is why I asked farrier to come back out and look before the vet so I could tell vet farrier had removed the shoes and nothing under them in way of abscess etc.

well what's done is done, no point in going back over it now... but if she's still not 100% right I'd consider reducing her turnout space so she can't hoon around too much, just in case there is something going on that would benefit from more controlled movement.

Our suspensory was only noticeably lame day after working quite hard in the school, day after that she was ok. We don't have a school so there was a delay in spotting what was going on.

They just moved fields so are not hooning around now just grazing as last week the field they were on had less grazing and were hooning

Thanx :)

oopsie vet did say she suspects hoof
Oh and i did not want bute as I wanted to keep an eye on here daily this week for her getting worst as if on bute it would mask this.

Well a few nights this week she lay down about 4 times in evening quite close together between 6 - 10pm but Wednesday she only lay down once as last night too. Today vet just been and my mare trotted up fine on the straight unlike me lol. In the school she tried to canter all the time i had to keep telling her to trot.

Anyway vet happy we have till Monday off then do a week of walk then the next week introduce trot. Thnx for in put, some times you need to do what your gut tells you my gut said just turnout and let nature heal in time, I live here and can pop out regularly and keep an eye on her and others and would call vet if getting worse but little by little she seemed more comfortable, vet said healed very quickly. So either she tweaked something or the shoes did something and that healed after shoes taken off and moved into different holes or something.

Phew feel better now, though must admit i judge a lot by watching them at night on the cctv and the fact she only lay once during early evening gave me a good feeling
