Cassie, I'm in love - what a stunning head! Got any of her withour rug?

This is my first big hairy lad, having been used to delicate Tb's, how do you all cope with the mane and feathers in the winter, also do you get the mite injection done because of all that hair as a preventative?:)
 
Eric is lovely, a proper HW maxi cob, have you thought about doing some showing? I think he'd do well in a maxi cob class. I also think gorgeous as he is he could also carry off being hogged and trimmed......
 
Theresa F has a great page of info on how to care for manes and feathers in winter - PM her for it (I'd send it to you but i think its on my other laptop)
I do have the injection for Hovis as i point blank refuse to clip his feathers off! My vet advises me to brush his feathers to remove the sweat build up behind his knees but that is because Hovis gets sore spots behind that area.

Eric is lovely - must be a shock to have that much horse underneath you after a TB :D

Cassie your girl actually made me say wow out loud, she's gorgeous.

Out of curiosity - what qualifies a horse as a heavyweight? Mine is over 17 hands and a mainly ID ISH (has a TB on each side as great grandparent but out of two RIDs, so not sure why he's registered ISH ;)), loads of bone, but not feathery. Is it the featheryness that qualifies them, or bone, or literally weight? Sorry for the numpty question, I've just never really understood the classification!
 
Trish yours would be a hunter type rather than a cob type. Could be a HW or maybe a MW it is to do with how much bone and their weight carrying ability. Maxi cobs should have the apprearence and conformation of a cob but be over height for showing purposes. They should NOT be a hogged overweight hunter or a hogged draft horse although many will be draft crosses. Hunter types generally are more horse looking and less cobby, longer legs in particular. RID and ID crosses do VERY well as show hunters and working hunters.
 
They are all lovely.
I'm not sure what qualifies as a HW. I know my boy isn't a HW cob, but he is definitely a chunky boy compared to the TBs on the yard.

Thanks Katt :) Aye, I know he's no cob! He'd be classed as a HW hunter (showing friend wanted to buy him off me for that purpose). Just wondering as some of the pics on here I'd class as cobs rather than HWs, and some I'd all a HW rather than a cob... got a bit confused when the thread title said HWs and cobs appeared - not criticising, just my brain got lost :D

E.g. Tiga, I'd not consider your boy (who is GORGEOUS by the way) a cob at all. Not that I'm making any assertions about what a cob is, but just the way I've always thought of cobs, he doesn't fit that bill.

Whereas the gorgeous wee cob pony (can't remember poster's name but had the pics of it tided up and jumping) I wouldn't call a HW!
 
Yep a lot of the horses above aren't HW, tiga's horse is a very gorgeous LW cob.

I think a lot of people have interpreted the thread as "post a pic of anything vaguely chunky" which is fine but strictly we've got cobs, hunters and drafts all mixed in together!

I would be interested as to what you think jim is?

i would say heavyweight but coming previously from an arab cross most horses seem heavyweight!

he is only 4 so still has a lot of filling out and a bit of growing to do yet (he is bum high)

I still have my 'L' plates so would love to know what you would call him. I always describe him as a cob. He was born at a rescue after his dam was rescued in foal from some travellers.
 
He is a lovely chap, drum horses are few and far between.

Here are my two. My gypsy cob, Stinky is 14.3 with 9 1/2" of bone - only a little one and hubbie's Farra Clydesdale is 16.2 with the same amount of bone.

FDC - the last picture of the first set of Fany (standing in the field) is clearly proof that horses descended from woolly mammoths, and Fany is the missing link! :D She's gorgeous, never seen quite so much fluff!

My lad is probably a MW cob really... Not nearly as much hair or bone as the draughts in here!
