Hi

Ive got a 9 year old appaloosa mare and a few days ago noticed a lump in the throat latch area.

Squashy and moveable caused no pain when I touched it.

Still there a few days later - horse is fine in herself. Still has attitude, eating and drinking fine.

Ive kept her in last night and tonight as thought it was grass glands but now Im not sure and starting to panic!

Any ideas what it could be? It is not strangles and cant be either - on a yard with 3 people and my horse has not been anywhere neither has any one elses.

It feels today like 2 lumps. More I look and feel the more I start thinking all sorts! Googling everything but not entirely sure what Im supposed to google either :/

Any thoughts?

Thank you

Liz (have tried to upload a pic but unable to)

I have an elderly mare with a similar thing. They feel like they are in her windpipe.

My old mare had an enlarged thyroid and that was the size of a brussel sprout and only one lump one side. She lived for over 10 years like that until something else finished her off. It’s very common I believe. If you google you’ll find some images.

I echo grassglands and have had two appy mares who had pretty pronounced ones. The first one had them over the supposed flat part of her cheeks, the second they were more in her throat

Thanks everyone. Ive sent pics to the vets who say keep an eye incase they grow.

Is it worth keeping her in for 4 days? Box rest? I can lunge and ride to get rid of the energy. To a cerain point....
