my warmblood takes the hay out of the haybar each night and throws it all around the stable..i have changed hay 3 times and 2 of the 3 batches were beautiful meadow hay the other horses fell in love with...he is out in the day and is always asking for hard food ( gets 3 feeds a day ,...each no bigger than a rugby ball - one is calm and collected the other 2 topline baileys and chaff )...any suggestions gratefully welcome as he is wasting bales of hay each week.....

My mare does this. Her stable buddy taught her to bury her head as deep in the hay bar as possible and then throw it all on the floor in one go-she takes great pleasure in doing this! Although I also think she does it because she prefers to eat from the floor. A haynet is the only way to guarantee that as little hay as possible is wasted and to stop him throwing it around his stable. However, my mare is quite happy to eat her hay off the floor and out of her bedding so is it not possible to leave the hay on the floor or pile it up in the corner and see if he will eat it?

Look at it from the horses point of view (quite literaly!)You are asking a vegitarian prey animal to stick its head into a hay bar to eat. This restricts the vision. No wonder they feel uncomfortable and tip the contents out into the open to graze. The same applies to those big deep water bucket things.

thanks will tey the haynet option.... he is in good condition and his teeth have been checked...i am also thinking mikes advice about what a horse sees really valid.. mmm alot of food for thought here... maybe he is trying to tell me he hates the haybar!

AS an aside, we had a horse with grass sickness . Very ill in horsepital . Staff were wonderfull but he just wouldnt/couldnt drink. And he was going to die if this didnt change. I had been researching anything and everything regardless of how odd or quirky it seemed ,which might help. I found an annecdotal reference to water bucket colour and shape ,red and low being best. I went shopping and added this bucket to the vast selection of different flavoured waters he had(the staff were trying EVERYTHING bless them) I was told that he seemed to favour that bucket and whilst It was no miracle cure, every mouthfull of water he took from it made him stronger and held death back. Dennis is now 15 and competing at novice intermediate BE .
