Our pony has suddenly come down with severe thrush in all 4 hooves. Cushings almost certainly to blame so his prascend dose will be adjusted but we also need to treat this thrush. I'm hoping to draw on HHO wisdom (and of course vet advice too) to get on top of this. What is the current thinking about how to treat? Iodine spray? I've heard good things about Red Horse products but wasn't sure which one to use - hoof paste? Field paste?

If it makes a difference, he lives out 24/7 but we can bring him in for treatment.

Red horse here too. Wash and scrub the feet with a stiff-ish brush that will get into all the crevices, spray liberally with the sole cleanse spray (syringe is a great idea) then apply hoof stuff in any tighter holes, cracks and crevices and arti-mud everywhere else.

Field paste won't stick to a wet foot so I have it but generally dont use it.

Thank you everyone, I wasn't sure from reading the product descriptions which one would be suitable. Luckily our field is currently very dry, it really is the cushings that has brought this on and it's progressed super fast. Fingers crossed that we can get it cleared up soon, he's lost a fair bit of hoof already which is worrying.

I use red horse products but have used the Kevin bacons one . It’s amazing, stinks like nothing else but cleared up an old cobs thrush which was bad

Soaking the feet in a Dettol solution also helps. Red Horse stuff is really good, and if I run out, I have used zinc and castor oil cream mixed with a few drops of eucalyptus oil and a slug of honey. The black, tar like material that thrush produces can be scraped off before applying.

I use Red Horse Products but have not had a horse with thrush since the late 60's when a new horse came in with it. We treated him then with good old stockholm tar which you can still use today but it can be a bit messy. Red Horse products is probably the best way to go.

Mini update just in case anyone is interested.

Once the thrush was spotted, we thoroughly cleaned & dried the hoof before applying some blue spray that we had around to treat foot rot. Farrier came the next day and has cut away a lot. I ordered some artimud and some field paste. So far we've been using the artimud and it's all working a treat - no smell from his feet at all. We've adjusted his prascend dose so fingers crossed this now won't return! Thank you all for the advice.

That’s great, I’ve been using Hedgewitch sole saviour and it’s cleared up my mares thrushy frogs and helping heal fog cracks she has too, I’m sure the last week of dry weather has helped too!

My horse has contracted heels and deep frogs - he is in straw and his stable at the yard is quite small for his size. I have been battling with thrush for a while. I found the Kevin Bacon hoof solution clears it up cosmetically - but the gap between his heels means it hangs around. I have tried flushing the gap with red horse sole cleanse has helped and have used the artimud all over frog and the heels.

I have now changed tack and ordered the NT-dry powder. This is like talcum power is working on the theory of drying it out. I have been using it a week and I am very pleased- it looks like it is actually drying out! Makes sense really. It’s worth trying if you have very deep crevices that remain damp which is what thrush really likes

Hedgewitch frog & Sole is brilliant. I always keep a bottle in the cupboard in case of smelly feet.
