Thrush - Dettol?

My farrier recommended Clean Trax, there was a fortnight's delivery time, so in the meantime, I used Tea-tree spray. By the time the CleanTrax came the problem had cleared up!

I keep a soaking bag and stock clean trax in first aid kit. It’s good for cleaning out hooves at end of abscesses too.

Red Horse Field Paste all the way. I've used just about all of their products with good success but the Field Paste is far and away the best. It can be packed into all the crevices and sticks.

Also check the horse's diet as I believe there is a link between (high) sugar intake and thrush. It could just be the sugars in the grass if the grazing is stressed (being burnt with heat/eaten short/flush after rain etc).

I know a few people who feed Calm Healthy Horses supplements and have noticed massively improved hoof health not only with the mineral supp but the GrazeEzy and AlleviateC. I've just ordered my first batch so I hope it lives up to the hype!

I’ve not got feet issues but I’ve started feeding both products for grass issues about ten days ago. Massive improvement.

Interesting experiences thank you for the input.

I had a look in the agricultural shop and they sold the purple foot spray for sheep. Wasn’t sure if it was any different from purple spray for horses which I already had so held off. Still dettol-Ing at the moment until I decide what else to buy. He’s due a trim on Monday so hopefully we can cut away dead tissue and get a bit more to the surface to work on. I do like the sound of the red horse paste to pack into the crevice. He’s on a very very low/no sugar diet as he’s got ems so I don’t think it would be diet related. I believe it’s been picked up from the previous yard as he’s never ever showed signs before and I’ve owned him for 13 years. The same with mud fever- never had that before but picked that up there too! Bit of a quagmire. It could just be that he’s more susceptible to things now too.

I used to consign Field Paste to being just for mild cases really and think you'd need something "stronger" for really bad thrush... But recently a horse on my yard was suffering from canker (Or at least thrush so bad that PTS was on the cards! Vet and farrier both said canker though with the prognosis that entails). They'd tried everything so I gave them a pot of Field Paste mainly because they needed something to kind of pack the hoof rather than because I thought it would actually work. But work it did! Vet and farrier both flabbergasted. I was too, to be honest.

So yeah... I'd always reach for the Field Paste now. I think it does depend a bit on what particular microorganisms are causing that particular thrush and different products will work better on different things.

My horse Harvey came from Ireland with thrush and sheared heels having tried a fair few of the remedies already listed on this thread including iodine which made him too sore both the vet and the farrier advised this stuff, JAF Antibacterial hoof dressing it is Iodaform in Eucalyptus Oil it worked beauifully .

Having a google search for that and can’t seem to come up with anything.... it’s been a long week I’m probably doing something silly but would be interested in this to compare to the field paste.
