My horse has got thrush for the first time ever and I am a bit worried. Apparently there are a few horses I know that have the same, I think its to do with the dry weather and now the rain that we have had. Her bed is dug out every day to the floor by myself, she's on shavings. Her feet are picked out once a day in the evening when I get there after work and also after she has been on the walker which is most days.

She had thrush last weekend on her near fore and someone on the yard suggested mouth wash with alcohol in it as their farrier swore blind it worked and it was the best remedy, since I've been using it a number of people have said they have used the same with success.

I treated it with some mouthwash over the weekend and it looks really good now, dried up. But last night picking out her off side hind a load of frog (which was white) came away and smells foul. I've given it a good brush out and put mouth wash on it again but has anyone got any suggestions if there is anything else I can use to prevent the other two falling foul of thrush (sorry for the pun).

No lameness, just his disgusting smell on the off fore. I don't feel its worth a vets visit. What do you do to treat?

Please .... no rude comments necessary, just looking for advice.

If I suspect thrush is brewing (which seems to happen when the sheep are in the field) I brush with iodine. The decent 10% stuff, not the weak version. Kills thrush without damaging the tissues. There will be lots of suggestions but this definitely works.

I have spent 4 months battling bad thrush and sheared heels on all 4 of my cobs feet and the only thing that has started to really make it shift is iodine - i used the 10% Battles stuff in a spray bottle. I've just moved on to the absorbine frog and sole for his sheared heels as it doesn't stain like the iodine and also having good results with that but still use the iodine once a week. Try and remove as much of the raggy bits as you feel comfortable with so you can really get into the cracks (if there are any). Good luck, horrid stuff, I have that many lotions and potions on my box that I could start a tack shop!

I also now rate the Gold Label Frog spray. but if you can get povidine-iodine dilute to 1% and scrub/tub feet with it for around 5 minutes (I scrub with a small washing up brush)-do it daily for a week, then weekly for prevention.

Thank you all for your comments.

It alarmed me last night as I can't believe how quickly its took a hold but then I've never come across this before so it came as a bit of a surprise as she's always had fantastic strong and clean feet.

I think I will keep up with the mouthwash on the near fore and try the iodine on the hind, if I can't find iodine in the feed merchants I will go with the tea-tree.

Do you think picking them out and treating them once a day will be okay? I'm starting a new job next week so definitely can't go up the yard before work as I am starting at 7am. Its a pain as she's out at night and in during the day, unless I ask the yard to pick out the two problem ones. I expect I will go up tonight and find all four affected :(

I only go once a day in the evening, if i'm riding then I pick them out as normal before I ride and then when I've finished i'll give them a good brush out and then apply whatever I am using and let him stand on the concrete for 10-15 mins before putting him in for the night. Field paste is very good at staying put, i'll be using it over winter and lathering it on the night before!

I’m a red horse fan- sole cleanse, field paste, hoof stuff depending on frog cleft depth etc

My farrier recommended Red Horse Clean Trax when my horse had a fungal/bacterial infection of the hoof wall/white line. It tooj 2 weeks for that to arrive and I had cleared it up with tea-tree spray in that period, for which I was highly thinkful when I read the palaver that I would have had to go through to use the CleanTrax.

Clean trax isn’t a red horse product? It’s usually the best option for deep white line disease/ when it’s that or discussing resection.

Cleantrax a palaver, you say PaS? Surely not... :D. Though it's invaluable if you need the heavy mob in. Brilliant stuff.

I use Red horse sole cleanse routinely and hoof stuff if needed, I'd have thought that those two would do the OP's job fine.
