what do you look out for and how do you treat thrush in horses feet?

a nasty smell when you pick out feet. i use hibiscub on it in the morning and evening as that's what i was told by vet- seems to work ok but there are probably loads of other treatments.

ive always gone on the smell, i only asked because friend keeps going on about her pony has it really bad, i had a look and couldnt smell a thing and i didnt know if there was anymore signs thanks

If it is really bad there is a product called Formalin that you get from the vets - I believe it burns the dead skin away )don't quote me on that)

Hydrogen peroxide, diluted with a little water. Then purple spray on top! If you hold the hoof up, use a syringe to inject the HP into the base of the hoof (around the frog) it will fizz up (badly if your horse has it that bad) You can smell it a mile off! Hold the hoof up and little it fizz for 10/20 seconds or so, put foot down to let it drain out and then spray it with purple spray - my farrier told me this and seems to work a treat!

thanks for that is there any other signs as i said i know about the smell you cant miss that, but this horse dont smell one bit and all she keeps going on about is that its got bad thrush.

Frog falling apart, thick black goo and a really bad smell are the signs. First stage, smell, second stage, goo and third stage all of these and frog coming away and horse lame.

Why does she think it has thrush?

i have no idea he has none of the above, she is one of those if someone else has it she has.

Oh then just tell her to wash out the feet several times a week with salt water and maybe add a little tea tree or eucalyptus oil to the water.

It is actually good for stage 1/stage 2 thrush and won't do the foot any harm and make her feel better.

Hydrogen peroxide but wear gloves!
Dont use hibiscrub, i say that because it caused my horses frogs to get worse because it made them wet and they went all puss-y

Hydrogen Peroxide as others have said. Formalin will kill anything in there bacteria wise and the pony would have the hardest feet around but it's horrible stuff to work with and would probably be quite sore. I have used it on sheep and cattle but don't fancy trying it with horses.
