ok, horsey got thrush on top of all his other problems.......vet said to clean with 1 in 10 bleach and apply antebac over the top


what do you guys all do? need to clear it up asap

btw he didn't have any discharge or smell, farrier picked it up when putting roll bars on...but there was some blood when he cut it back and its in the cleft

15 min soak in Milton (which is bleach) made up as per manufacturers instructions or Borax at a rate of two heaped tablespoons per gallon. Then slather in Sudocreme.
 
Ok, totally against everyone else, I use an equimins Tea Tree spray.

I get the hoof and frog really clean then spray it. Twice a day for a couple of days.

I don't know if this is true thrush though, It gets a bit soggy and smelly but no discharge. Perhaps that's just a really mild case?

i had a bloody nitemare with the big blumin sod tonite.....I've been using 3% hydrogen peroxide dilted and flushing it with a syringe, then applying antebac over the top....but it seems like there is a hole in the cleft...is this normal?

anyway he was a swine....do you think I could pick his foot up to do it, no, I've strained my whole body trying to wrestle with him...now I know he has loads of foot issues as per my previous posts but he makes things so difficult for me, so we're not speaking tonight

Purple spray didn't work for ours

He is probably being a nightmare cos it hurts! You mentioned blood? Broken skin and Hydrogen peroxide? Ouchy!!!

We eventually managed to clear up my old girl's thrush with hydrogen peroxide and tetcin green/blue spray from vet having tried all of the above including Manuka honey to no avail!

The hole in his cleft is caused by the thrush. As long as you get what ever you are using into the hole it should help clear it up.

Your farrier will have cut most of the necrotic tissue away though so their shouldnt be much left for you to deal with. Purple spray three times a week is a wonderful preventer of thrush during the soggy damp months.
 
thanks folks for all your useful tips..... I think I might try the honey, a girl in work produces her own so it will be super healthy stuff

Thanks the Farrier re the tip for purple spray for prevention...defiinately going to try that

a few more question tho....because there is a hole, do I have to treat until it closes up? like I say there is no muck coming out, I'm just flushing it really....and is he ok to go out? and should I keep hoof covered to prevent mud and muck getting in? should I get the vet to have a look?

Sorry, but I think there are more proven ways of clearing this up than using honey.

Research is still in it's infancy and has been done on Manuka Honey only.

It sounds like your horse has a nasty dose. I think you should be contacting your Farrier regarding your turnout etc questions as he has been dealing with it. Also ask him if your vet needs to be involved.

I don't mean this to sound harsh, but there is a time and place for trying new things. I don't think this is one of the, as he sounds quite sore.

) thrush, but am finding this thread strangely reassuring in a way.

Star too has a cleft frog, with a crack running between her heels. It has thrush in it, but I've been keeping it under control with regular hoof picking and cleaning with diluted milton. I have tried Peroxide, Nettex Frog disinfectant, Equimins disinfectant, Horse Data hoof disinfectant... None of these can clear it, only control it.
Anyway I too noticed a hole (no smell) and flushed it out with diluted milton. Maggots!!!!! I was mortified (bad horse care!) However, there was still no smell, so I kept at it with the Milton/disinfectant. 24 hours later - No Maggots.
Star showed no pain, there was no soft tissue and no weeping tissue and no lameness. But we are left with a deep cleft running through the frog and between the bulbs of the heels. It MUST be dosed daily with purple spray, or else the thrushy smell comes back
Farrier is coming this week. Any more suggestions?
 
oooo maggots, thats yuk...poor horsey....my horsey seems to be getting worse, going to get the vet whatever is going on is 'eating' away at his frog....there is a large hole in the cleft as I said before, but the outer covering of his heels is disappearing so you can now see the round shape of the heels...he's not lame and I am still treating it and turned him out.....he has many many foot issues going on at the moment and lost the plot so needs to be out

really worried about it
