I am so sorry I am sure this has been done to death but I find the search facility on here just too hard.

My boy, unshod as of 4 months ago, has had one trim in the meantime, looks great, moves well and is sound. His feet are vastly improving and I want to marry my new farrier who suggested it.

But, first time in my whole time of owning horses, he has got thrush in one hind hoof. It is hard to explain but it is sort of under the frog and is oozy at the frog/heel join. He is due a tidy up, although it doesn't look needed, but what can I do to treat it? He lives out. I thought I might just glug some vinegar in it?

I am sure I have seen a lot of barefoot people talking about thrush. Why does it seem more prevalent in the naked hoof?

Thank you

i think in part we notice it more/farriers usually trim more frog away when shoeing so it doesn't get a hold.

I would highly recommend the red horse products (though have also used diluted milton). I have used the sole cleanse and the hoof stuff in the past.

Also highly recommend red horse products. My horse had thrush in one hind foot that would just not clear with other products. A good clean, sole cleanse and hoof stuff for a couple of days and it totally cleared. I just used the sole cleanse every few days now to keep it at bay.

I am battling thrush at the minute in my barefoot pony. Trimmer has cleaned up his frogs and told me to use a small amount of cotton wool soaked in iodine and push it (gently) into the central sulcus and change daily. She made me a little tool out of a couple of nails. It cleared up great but has come back since we had some rain so I must have stopped treating it too early. Started again now and its amazing how quickly his once very deep sulcus starts to harden up and close.

I will definitely be getting some of the Red Horse product that you pack into the sulcus for winter.

OK, thank you. I can't actually see any way of getting anything into the oozy bit, it is a tiny hole. Could I tub it? Oh Mr Neurotic will love that!!
Will definately look at red horse products.
I did wonder about asking farrier to drop in and lop off some frog, but as it is the first time he has ever had a visible one it seems a shame!

another one for red horse products would never ever use anything else but for trush. for keeping it at bay and treating it when present!
try the sole cleanse for the tiny hole you can spray it in or use a syringe!
