Ok friends youngster who is being broken at the moment has always had thrushy frogs!

But with this wet, warm, moist weather it has really took hold. Horse's frogs stink and the horse obviously is tender in the foot now

Owner is always iodining the frogs daily and despite picking out feet all the time, it has got worse and now the breaking has to be put on pause as slightly sore not quite 1/5th lame.

Farrier out tomorrow to hopefully cut back the rotten smelly stuff but is there anything else home treatments, crest toothpaste (following on from sarcoid thread) that she can do to ease this and hopefully get on top of it once and for all???

I've suggested tubbing it and then hydrogen peroxide the usual suspects but anything else welcomed!

Mine tends to get a bit of thrush when the sheep are in the field.

I wash with hibiscrub or salt water, dry thoroughly and then slap some sudocrem on, you can plug any holes with cotton wool soaked in sudocrem. Always works for mine. It might be worth looking at diet to see if the youngster's getting too much sugar.

Youngster only on calm and condition due to barley allergies and no 'treats' or carrots or apples!

I thought about sudocreme too but wasn't sure!!! But like the idea! Anything to stop the bacteria from getting oxygen!!!!

Keep them coming!!!

My horse went really lame with thrush despite using iodine twice daily which had no effect. I used hydrogen peroxide for a few days and then purple spray he was sound again within a week.

Iodine does kills good cells, perhaps that is why the frog is not improving (?)

Maybe the youngster does have something else other than thrush. The farrier will be able to confirm.

What I have done is use saline solution or spray it with Milton solution. I have soaked it with Epson Salt to clean it as well, depends how dirty the foot has been. Repeated for a couple of days. And then sprayed with purple spray as well on short term with good results.

Once we sprayed it with hydrogen peroxide, but rinsed it off.

Good luck.

I have just been having this battle with my horse!! I tried sheep stuff and be ever so careful not to get it on their skin as it burns!!

I also tried hydrogen prooxide, purple spray and nothing worked.

I ended up getting some power off the vet for £6 and it cleared it up within a few days.

I parted the frog with a hoof pick and poured it in the gap as just putting it on top was not doin the job. It helped dry it out and bobs your uncle.

Powder was the only thing that worked for my horse as I couldn't keep inside the frog dry with the other methods.

If the thrush has really taken hold then I would use CleanTrax to deep clean, then keep on top of it with red horse field paste.

My filly had mild thrush last summer, I cleaned with salt water, dried and sprayed Stockholm tar and this seemed to get rid, although I know some people say Stockholm tar seals in the infection... this summer it's started again so have ordered some foot master livestock foot rot spray as heard good things.

I used a product called Thrush buster which I thought was brilliant for my horse.

I've used Hydrogen Peroxide before and didn't think it was very effective for my horse but others i've known have used that and its worked very well.

Scrub well with epsom salts dissolved in water - the epsom salts will draw moisture from the frog. Dry well with a towel - really get into the nooks and crannies, then spray with Footmaster spray. It's got anti-fungal properties and will also dry out and harden the frog. Although purple in colour it's totally different from the iodine based sprays that you find in tack shops - that stuff will be useless against thrush.
