The one I keep at home would stay out - her field is quite sheltered so she would be fine. My other horse's field is quite exposed to the elements, so i would bring him in, but only if it was going to be really bad and last ages. Thundery showers I would leave him out.
I just brought missy in as there was huge rumbles of thunder I mean really loud, brought her in and fed her, She did jump about abit until the rain absolutely poured it down , it was so loud but I think she seemed happier in .
Lightening is a different story though , she would be in straight away .
I'm cruel.
I leave mine out all year, regardless of the weather, they're out 24/7 (but rugged to the eyeballs as I have more rugs than Imelda Marcos had shoes).
They don't react to thunder, lightning, wind, snow, etc now...hardy fat beasts!

Always out in thunder and lightening storms. Even horses who are usually stabled are never ever brought in under these conditions; the risk is too great.
My thoughts to Tia, I feel it could be safer out in thunder storms, as i no of one horse who went bonkers in his stable and tryed to jump his stable door and riped all his guts, But i do have mixed thoughts on this.
As years ago I had a little pony that got kicked in the temple (head) by another horse and sadly died. mixed thoughts....is there a right way or a wrong way in thunder storms!!!!!
TBH,
Depending on weather ur horse has lived in or out most of there lives, u gotta think tht they usally live out in it an is natural in the wild, go with ur instincit and if they go bonkers in , calm them down or put them out , if they are out and run about a bit when it rumbles don't freak out because it makes ur heart jump a bit, this is just a horses way of showing it , but if the gallop like mad bring them in a get a sweat rug on them. lmao
