Oh dear, it looks like our new (old) dog is scared of thunder! We've just had a terrific thunder clap - he dived under the table and tried to dig a hole. Left some impressive scratch marks on the floorboards! He is refusing to come out now, poor thing. He is almost completely deaf but the thunder must have been loud enough. I'm not looking forward to November ...

Anyway, I really should have posted before. Some of you might remember how just over a month ago we had to have our old dog pts. I really appreciated the replies I got on here. :) We didn't wait long before getting another rescue dog - also fairly old (in double figures, the vet reckons) and quite deaf. Rather foolish really getting another old dog as no doubt there'll be more heartbreak in a few years time ...

He is a real sweetie though, great with the kids and fine with the cats (though they don't appreciate his attempts to play with them :D) and chicken. He follows me everywhere and will even lie on the mat in front of the shower when I'm having a shower. :D The only problem so far is his fondness for shredding seatbelts. So far we've had to replace two. Despite not having a lot of teeth left he chews through them in seconds.

Here are a couple of pictures:

(I'm sorry that the photos are all different sizes. Photobucket hates me. :()

I'm sorry to hear about your other oldie :(
He looks like a sweet old man :D looks like butter wouldn't melt :p
I took on an oldie 2 years ago, she's 15 now. Best dog I've ever had :D
Has cost me hundreds in vets bills :( But I wouldn't change my decision to keep her.

I love the idea of giving an old rescue a home.. Just need to get the OH used to the one dog first! He looks a sweetie.

I'm working on the two-dog scenario. ;)

Oh yes, the vet bills... Our last dog had three operations within the first year that we had her... This one was (surprisingly!) not castrated, so we've had that done asap - it turned out to be more expensive because he needed to be on a drip due to slightly dodgy liver values.

He looks like a lovely old chap :)

Tink sympathises...she has so far this evening been in the saucepan cupboard :o and the downstais loo due to the thunder!

Well done! Get him a cheapo car crate or coat the seatbelts in some anti-chew stuff - or just have someone to watch him and discourage him.

Re Thunder, I would just make sure he has a nice safe dark den he can retire to, at his age I wouldn't start doing serious proofing work, although you can get tapes of certain noises and gradually turn them up/reward the dog when he is calm and passive and don't cuddle/fuss when he shows fear, ignore it or distract him, fussing will reinforce it x

Oh bless and good on you for offering an oldie a home:) what Cavey said, offer him an open crate and make it look like a den, thick blanket over the top and feed him some nice goodies in there as a positive associator, put some loud tunes or or tv up and Get a DAP collar/plug in to use when thunder arrives and try some rescue remedy, you could also get sedative from the vet during really bad weather or fireworks, as he could well be scared of those too.

The only thing I would add to the above is that I used to put Rescue Remedy in my old girls water during the run up to and beyond November 5th.
He looks a real sweetie, and so nice to see an oldie finding a home.
