We had terrifc storms here yesterday, (and due again today by the reaction of the boy dogs) 2 of the 3 dogs were trying to bury themselves in my basement, the bitch doesn't care. Outside the house all the horses were grazing calmly with all hell let loose above them, the goat doesn't give a monkeys but was in as he isn't waterproof, and the cats were going about their business as normal.

So, why does thunder appear to effect (some) dogs in a more dramatic manner than other animals?

Do gun trained dogs accept thunder as par for the course?

We had a dog who was never bothered by thunderstorms until one day when a roof fell on his head - not during a thunderstorm though!

From then on he would hide during a storm as I think he associated the loud bangs with the sky falling in on him. Maybe the dogs have had different experiences that have led to this?

Our dog was funny, cos everything else in life he attacked with gusto - the milkman, the dustmin man.......

Our dog used to be scared of them. I think he picked the energy up off of my mum as she was also scared of storms. Mum has recently not been scared of them, and dog seems fine now aswell.

Barney (lab) was never bothered by thunder when he was young, or fireworks either. He used to sit in the back doorway and watch the fireworks every November

He didn't become bothered until he was older, never really knew what changed?

I don't think we've had a big storm since I've had Henry but I think he is likely to be a bit more sensitive somehow...

One of our terriers and one of the lurchers are petrified of storms while the others don't mind them at all. One of the other terriers is terrified of slamming doors as she got caught by one a few years ago but their is no apparent reason for the others being scared of storms.

My little Terrier hates storms.......

and fireworks, loud bangs, Christmas Crackers, gun shots etc.

I don't remember him being like that when he was younger, he is 12 now and it is only the last few years I have noticed it.

He has to sleep in my bed if there is a storm!

Must be a Terrier 'thing'. Our Border is just the same, although he's always been that way - he's 11 in October. He gets very clingy when there's a storm, or any other sudden loud noises.

No idea but both my terriers go running outside to find out who's making all the noise...same with fireworks

Perhaps its just a personal thing like with us...some are jumpy (like me)...some aren't.

How is Canada treating you...do you feel at home yet?

My Parents have 6 Gundogs, only one reacts to thunder storms and fireworks, but he was also slightly gunshy when he started his training. He is fine with gunshot now, but still not too happy during storms and fireworks. He is quite a sensitive dog with everything though.

Otto doesn't give a stuff about anything, in fact he was so unresponsive to anything when we first had him, my Dad was convinced he was deaf

My 2 dogs love it & fireworks! They will sat & watch fireworks!

A friends 2 gundogs that you can shoot a shotgun over their heads without them batting an eye hate them & fireworks. Scuttle off into a room under the stairs & under the desk.

I think it is more to do with them not knowing were it comes from & all the energy of it?
