Has anyone tried this?

Starting to suspect my lad has ulcers (resents the leg when ridden, very lack lustre in general) and would like to try a supplement initially to see if it's worth scoping. If he improves on a supplement, he'll be scoped...if not, will have to explore other avenues!

Anyway, Gut Restore includes:
Inner slippery elm bark, Marshmallow root, Marshmallow leaf, Meadowsweet, Rosehip, Comfrey, Licorice, Purified Beta Glucans, Purified Pectins, Phosphatidyl Choline, Food Grade Beeswax.

I was intending on feeding Slippery Elm Bark in this interim stage just to see if this lining his stomach would make a difference to his attitude, but this supplement has plenty in it that should help reduce the effects of acid splashing about in his belly! So wondering if anyone has had any success with it, as it's quite pricey if it doesn't work/he won't eat it!

I wouldn't feed anything with comfrey in it - it contains the same toxins as Ragwort (pyrrolizidine alkaloids) and causes liver disease (the reason it is a banned substance for human consumption in the US).

Thanks guys.

MissJessica - Your blog seems to not be about Gut Restore but their maintenance supplement?
carolineb - Not sure if it is orange!
glenruby - Oh wow, that surprises me a lot! Since comfrey is sold as an individual supplement and also in this, which was put together by an equine nutritionist :O

Good luck finding something.

I had 2 things from Thunderbrooks, one was an orange liquid and the other a powder. Perhaps I got them the wrong way round!!! It might have been powder.

David MArlin (an equine scientist who specialises in demystifying these sorts of things) was posting about this earlier - he said: Gut Restore contains some prebiotics but does not contain any live yeast. The amounts of active ingredients are not stated on their website. Gut Balancer by Science Supplements is 95% protected live yeast and 5% prebiotic (MOS). There is also trial data to show its efficacy. This is not really the same as Pink Powder or Gut Restore. It is also used by vets to treat severe hindgut disturbance - salmonella, colic, colitis, worm damage, etc.

Don't know if that helps you in any way but thought I'd post it in case. Here is his website - loads of useful info: http://davidmarlin.co.uk/articles/

The orange liquid is Liquid gold, the powder is gut restore - they are designed to be fed together.

I used them last summer along with Ulsagon, brilliant products which really helped to pick my horse up.

My advice would be to ring and speak to Dr Deborah Carly at Thunderbrooks, there is a lot of untruths told about their various products, I would rather hear it from the horses mouth so to speak, she will advice you against their supplements or steer you in the right direction of something more appropriate.
