Hello.A while ago there was a post about NZ green lipped mussles and if i remember rightly you have had good results from them.My 16 year old collie had Vestibular syndrome just before xmas and went on a course of Anti-flams to which he recovered nicely so we put him on Metacam for his arthritis in his hips.About a fortnight ago he had a slight replay of the Vestibular and went back onto another course of Anti-flams.My problem is that if he had another set back with the Vestibular while on Metacam he has to be at least 24 hours clear of it before he can go back onto Anti-flams.Soi am thinking of the mussle route.Could you please tell me the dosage and what would be the best form i.e capsule, powder or other.Sorry for the essay and thanks.

Hi there, sorry to hear about your doggie. When I first started using the mussels, I gave my dog 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening for a few weeks and then dropped it down to just 1 a day for maintenance.

I use the mussels themselves - Waitrose and Tesco sell them in 1kg boxes and they are about £5 for a box, or they used to be. You buy them frozen and then you have to thaw them - they take about 20 mins to thaw. Then you feed them raw to the dog. They can't be cooked otherwise you lose the important parts of them.

You can also buy extract of NZ Green Lipped mussels which I believe comes in powder or capsule form, but I just went straight for the whole thing, much easier than mucking around with tablets and powder.

Good luck with them. I believe there is still a thread not too far down in the Dogs forum - entitled Arthritis - a cure?? or something like that.
