My JRT has a tick, I bought some tick killer today which says to spray on and leave it. Apparrently the little bugger will be dead within 3 hours, it's not!! Last night I tried to suffocate it with tea tree skin cream, it seems to be supertick

I have got an appointment at the vets on Thursday morning, shall I just leave it til then? Any other ideas as I'm not keen on the tweezer idea cos I have a horrible feeling I'll leave the head in which know is very bad.

You can get tick hooks, they are very easy to use and cheap. You get them from the vets so I'd just pop in, taking one off is a two minute job so I'm sure they wouldn't mind showing you how to do it.

I wouldn't leave it on as if it gets full it might drop off and take a snack off you next

if you spin it with your finger tip and just keep spinning it it will let go and fall off! takes a few mins tho but head comes out then you get the satisfaction of squashing it!

I have found the hook very good - the tick comes off easily and I know that it isn't going to die and drop off somewhere in my bed (dogs favourite sleeping place). Don't try to burn them or get them to detach with alcohol - apparently it can cause them to puke, which can spread any disease they carry into the dog (I found this out after trying to remove a tick in this way from my daughter - a worry as we are in a Lyme's disease area
