Hello, first post here !
Little Jack Russel has what I think is a tick above his eye.
Shall I pull it out? Ive given it a go with tweezers but I think it may have popped. Its quite small, Should we just get the vet to get rid of it?

And I though flee replelent repeled them too, but apparently not, is there any repellant treatment for them?

Thanks

You can try with the tweezers - make sure the tweezers are parallel to the skin, get as close to the skin as possible, grasp what's left of the tick quite firmly and pull - if you aren't confident doing this, the vets is probably a good idea!
As far as I know, Stronghold helps repel fleas and ticks and Frontline is just fleas.

advantix is by far the best spot on for ticks. Id use a proper tick remover or given its in a delicate place it might be best to get the vet to do it.

Buy some tick remover thingies. Not sure what they are called but most vets and pet shops have them. They are about £4 but worth it. I have removed many with tweezers (from horse and huskies) but the tick removers are much better.

Use a tick comb (couple of quid at he vets) and use your finger to hold the rest of the lid down whilst you use it.Sooner rather than later as the longer the tick stays on the greater the risk of Lyme disease, Oz

The tick lasso thingies are good, I'm squeamish but have managed to remove a tick from our pup's lip and one from my pony's neck with it. I did have to give it to my OH to kill though

I had one in my leg 9 days ago! I am still traumatized!!!!!!! lol

I find an anticlockwise twist as you pull is usually successful, and to be honest have seen lots of animals with mouthparts left in at surgery its no bigdeal it usually ends up in a little pus spot and it comes out anyway! Those tick gadgets are great!

Did I tell you I had one in my leg ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Before you try to remove a tick rub it with surgical spirit or nail varnish remover. It makes the tick withdraw the lags that it hangs on with and comes away easily.

Not really a good idea to do this, traditionally ppl smeared with vasaline, whisky, frontline, nail varnish remover etc, BUT it causes the tick to vomit /regurgitate, and you are increasing the risk of lymes due to a higher level bacteria/saliva being pumped in x

Very true - we were warned of this before departing onto the moors for our 3rd year uni project - if we got a tick, never to smear anything on it, just get hold of the little blighter and pull it out with tweezers and do it as quick and neatly as possible as the trauma can also make them regurgitate - the bacteria residing in the hind gut is released into your blood stream then.
Nasty little things!
