I have recently moved my horses to new grazing, previously used for cattle, and am finding ticks on them most days!!

I know how to remove them, ie vaseline/vodka to kill them, then make sure head is removed too...etc but am concerned about the illnesses they can cause so am looking for some advice on preventing them from latching on in the first place, or killing them pretty quickly??

Any advice greatly appreciated!!

You can get frontline dog spray from your vet which does deter them but you do have to apply daily. Where I am the ticks are horrendous though and in less bad areas you could probably apply less frequently. It was my equine vet which suggested this

You can get a little plastic tick remover from the vet or pet shop which is much easier and quicker to use than anything else I have tried. The only disease I have experienced as a result of a tick bite bite is Lymes Disease, I dn't think it is very common in this country, and the tick which carries it is tiny, not one of the big ones, or so I have been told.

I live on a farm where there are 30+ wild red deer,so ticks are a real nuisance. Frontline does kill them and when they are really bad(now!) I make a spray using Catnip(make as you would herb tea) This seems to deter the ticks. I found this when I noticed less ticks on my cats when they had been rolling in the catnip.I have also noticed that animals with a shiny, slippery coat seem to be less affected.
I read a tip on FB today from a nurse. She uses liquid soap on a cotton wool ball, applies this to the tick, leaves for 20-30 seconds and the tick will wind itself out and is stuck to the cotton wool.
I know of several people who have had Lymes disease and some cattle up on the moor have been struck by tick fever, with the latter it is generally the weaker, introduced animals who are affected.
I am off now to frisk all the animals for ticks to try out the FB tip!:D

Get the little plastic tick remover from the vets and just pull them out.
I pull them out and then squish them. I'm usually quite 'live and let live' but I can't stand ticks! Got one on myself once, it was horrendous.
I dontbother with Vaseline/soap to kill them first, I just rive them out :D
Poor little things....

OK, thank you.

Does feeding Garlic or anything else repel them at all?

I really don't like them!!

Hi yes feeding garlic is brilliant for all sorts of things like that. You can all so get some teatree oil, dilute a little in some water and sponge your horse with it before you turn them out. That will deffiantly repel them, and kill them too.
Im itching now. Dont like ticks eww.
