Today I found a brown tick on my ponio! I was so horrified haha .. I got my field owner out and she managed to get it off but Gypsy didnt like it v much and kept trying to cow kick. Probs because it hurt so much! Bless her.

We dont usually get them until August. She had one last year aswell. Im not sure on what to think really as I dont really know much about them. Although ive herd that if the head gets stuck in then it can cause infection.

She always has fly spray on. Im just wondering if theres anything she can have or any sprays etc that stops ticks?

Probs not.

What experiences have you had with them how did u get them off etc xx

on my old yard one horse came in with 2 of them on his shoulder, we burnt it with a match and then pulled it out with tweezers, i've also been told you can tip alcohol on them and they shrivel then can be pulled out - but your right you have to get the whole thing out otherwise it can get infected so far as I know.

I've heard this stuff is quite good:

I use their fly spray in the summer which is brilliant - may be worth a go!

I have always been told not to burn them or smother in vaseline, apparently it makes the tick sick and all the nasty toxins go back into the horses blood system, uggh! the best way is to pull them straight out.

I got a little tick tool from the local vets (horse or small animal)

We have one of those Tick twezer things aswell. Very handy. I just hate them .. I really dont want her to end up getting infection or anything from it.

Easy - tweezers which I wrap around in loo paper, grab the body with the tweezers and then keep twisting gently - then the whole tick comes off, intact. The loo paper is because I do not want to touch the horrible things or have any blood on me!. Have to do it on my dogs every now and then!

This is what my field owner did, apart from Gypsy flintched and tried to cow kick so we managed to get its head and pincher things out but its bodys still left in there .. so shes put this antiseptic cream stuff on that apantly pushes the body out. The FO and her son is going to do it again in the morning. Im just worried about it to be honest as I really dont want Gyps to get infection.

Horrible things! xx

Never seen one on a horse, but my dogs get them all the time in the summer. Agree that the quickest way to get rid is with tweezers - if you twist them out you should get the whole thing. If you just pull they don't come out properly and the head stays in (and I imagine it would hurt more). Shouldn't hurt if done properly - my wussy thin-skinned lurcher copes :)

its not very helpful now, but maybe your YO pulled (which would hurt) instead of twisting? my staffie had one under her elbow - and staffies are very thin skinned underneath (with very little fur) - she was fine but I did twist very gently and slowly. Appreciate that if your mare was upset and cow kicking - time may not have been on your side!

Worst thing has to be seeing the revolting thing with its legs all waving -yeuch!

Yeah, she did pull instead of twisting!! OUCHHH. But if we touched it then Gyps kept getting really upset about it. Yeah awful things .. Makes me boil lol.
