You have still got time to get some pig oil and sulpher on. It is not good to use in the summer becasue the oil can burn the skin in strong sun/heat.
You can get rid of ticks by burning their bums with a cigarette and then wipping them out with a pair of tweezers. Burning their bottoms makes the jaws release, thus avoiding risk of them remaining when the body is removed and causeing infection.
I have used Baracade (which is for hen lops) in the past and this is very efective. It is also a repellent... well it repells flies and anything else too. It is not liscenced for horses, but my Vet suggested & supplied it.
Years ago I worked in France for a while with Hunters. When bringing them in from a summer off work they were covered, and I mean covered, with the bloody things. I had never experienced ticks before, my employers swore by using ether on them (cholorform) which bizarrely you could get from French chemists, wiping the ticks over with cotton wool soaked in the stuff and pulling them off when they were asleep! When they ran out of ether they used diesel (wouldn't recomment it tho'). They were rather odd people I must say! It was a hideous experience but have been fortunate to only have encountered one on a horse whilst in the uk! Mind you OH caught Lyme disease last year whilst in Scotland.......
Will be very interested in answers to this post as having the same problem myself. The worst thing is some of the ponies are scratching their faces on the fences and end up with bald patches. I have used coopers spot on but again its not licenced for horses, and it only lasts a couple of weeks and don't like using it too much.
Just wondering what form of frontline people use and how much and where do they apply it.
I've also used spot on in the past, but if am hoping there is something else to use, I have a hook to get them off, but am looking for something that can be applied over the summer
I was amazed last year when we moved house that my horse suddenly acquired some unwelcome visitors esp. one near his willy. It took some serious persuasion to remove that one.
My mare has had quite a few so far this spring especially one really big juicy one in her armpit last week. I hate them. They are revolting. Yuck. You can get those tweezer things to get rid of them.
I have two horse in Devon I have taken over 50 ticks off one in the last 3 days and 5 of the other. I spent a small fortune of the tick remover lasso and some tick spray 100% nataral. The lasso works on the bigger ticks but my poor horse had 6 opn his muzzel and face today and he was only out for 2 hours. Really worried as a friends horse got quite ill a couple of years ago because he had so many ticks on him they where draining him. I have used front line spray on my horses legs (wear gloves when putting it on) and it did work but I cant put this round their faces. Has anyone used frontline drops which you put on the back of cats and dogs necks. Thinking of trying this tomorrow and using 3 big dog doses and putting them places like behind the ears, base of the tail and along the midline /belly so hopfully this might protect them for a few weeks.
legendandboyo I would be really interested to hear how you get on with the frontline and whether it works. I'm thinking of trying it too but got 12 ponies to do so it'll end up abit costly if it doesn't work.
Thanks.
