is anyone else having major issues with ticks just now? everyday they come in with more ticks on them, use a special tick remover to get rid but is there nothin i can put on the skin to repel them?thanks
Frontline around the pasterns and muzzle (away from the reach of the tongue though!) helps. If the horse lies down though there's not much that would help other than dipping your horse in Frontline, sheep-dip style! Leovet Power Phazer spray is supposed to help (it's a general fly/insect repellent) but it never helped my horse when she lived in a tick-infested area.
Twist them off and squish them!
frontline spray (for cats and dogs) works a certain degree to repel them. I have never had a problem with ticks but i think they inhabit certain types of grass only so prob been lucky not to have had it in paddocks I've used.
Coopers spot on for cattle and sheep kills ticks. Apply 10ml under the mane (as leaves a greasy mark for a few days). Kills lice and helps with flies too.
Nothing will stop the little blighters attaching tho!
Father-in-law said something about deers spreading them??? Sth. about they are on the heads of the deers (between the horns) where they can't scratch themselves and everywhere they go, they leave them behind... so anything that deers eat from, there might be some...
Mind you, he could have just been pulling my legs...

Ask the vet as you'll have to get it from them anyway as any SQP worth their qualification won't sell it to you in a shop as its not within the products marketing authorisation. You can however get a written prescription from the vet and then an SQP in the shop can supply it to you.
we are having the same problem, it is only in the long grass which wasnt grazed n in the winter though.
we used the spray on frontline for dogs and cats on ours - seems to have done the trick.
