My JRT and border collie have a few ticks after our recent visit to scotland. Any idea of the best way to get rid of them? (the ticks - not the dogs)

If you have no proper tick tweezers, get some (old!) eyebrow tweezers and place them at the bottom of the tick (where its attached) with the blades parallel to the skin (as close as possible) grip firmly, pull slowly with a very slight twist.
The tick should come out - when its out check you have all the tick including the mouthparts (it will start to wave its little legs around!)
Kill it in a bit of alcohol. (If you don't get the mouthparts out, don't worry it won't grow back or work its way into the system or anything, it will just cause a little inflammation and be pushed out naturally)

hope your visit was good apart fae the pesky ticks?!

I canna recommend highly enough this wee magic tool - I have beastie trained for the "uh oh nasty" drill... she sees the wee green tick puller, knows there is an extended sit or lie down (or show me your tummy!) drill with a biccie at the end... she does need to have a sniff at the removed offender afterwards tho.

Ticks are the devils spawn and do horrible things if removed badly or pulled wrongly!

Ask your vet if he's got one of these for you...

(if Scotland didn't have midges and ticks... EVERYone would want to live here) :D:D:D

Hope you get rid of the blighters safely!

I confess I have a set (large and small) in each vehicle, the stable, the house, my pocket... when you live 1000 ft up among heather it's a part of life sadly... (had to use it on the young tb last year but not on any of the native ponies?).

I keep hoping these baltic winters will wipe the buggers out but no joy yet.

All our vets sell them up here... if you canna get online give me a shout and I'll send one down? Trade you for a tin of sunshine? ;)

Actually the body will push it out by creating as socking great abscess!!! (speaking from experience here).

NEVER PULL twist the the little suckers out.

Get a tick remover from the vets as these are good ones.Be careful about potential abcesses which can cause further infections as ticks carry nasty infections. My BC nearly died 6 years ago when he wasjust 8 months old.He picked upma tick in France recently after rolling in sheep poo,and within a short time the tick caused a localised swelling.
