Yuk! That time of year again. Those tiny wee deer/sheep ticks are rife on our grazing. Regularly pulling 10+ off b's muzzle and legs. This year instead of picking them off I'm determined to find a repellent that works? Any body tried switch or butox? I was also thinking about getting a couple of the scalibor dog collars and shortening them to fit his fetlocks. Anyone tried these? I called the vet for advice and he suggested frontline but this didn't prove effective last year and is v expensive.

I find the frontline spray on (not the spot on) works for about 4 weeks. We have sheep and deer ticks here and my fluffy cats like to go out collecting them. The horses don't seem to be attractive to the adult ticks but do get covered in nymphs which being on first blood so to speak are relatively harmless and easy to scrape off.
Back to the cats,I have noticed that when they have had a session in the Catnip they don't seem to get ticks. So I rub the horses with the stuff and make an infusion to spray on because it also seems to deter flies........patent pending!

Just please don't cover them in Vaseline....
It makes them panic and regurgitate all their hind gut contents into the host, which may include any number of blood borne nasties :(

We haven't seen any yet in Scotland. Still a bit cold and wet for them though!!

I've been getting ticks for a while up in the north of scotland horrible beasties! :(
Vet gave us spot on for sheep - apparently it works better than the equine ones. We put it on about a week ago (treatment is once a month) and so far so good, no new ticks! :D

We are north east Scotland. Hardy ticks up here. What's the name of the stuff you use sandi?

I envy you they're rife where I am :( My poor lad was being sucked dry for a while there but it's only in the last couple of weeks they started going for my mums mare, obviously Loki was tastier ;)
My mum just called the vet and asked for something that'd keep them away. They gave her a bottle of spot on for sheep or at least that's what it says on the bottle :)

Sorry read that wrong, thought it said "hardly" yes they are hardy sods aren't they!
