Ticks??

Hi,

My new horse seems to have a tick, above her hock. The other day it looked like a tiny scab, but she didnt like me touching it. I also think she might have one coming on he belly.

So looked at it today and its abit bigger, and a pale red colour. Im sure its a tick, but have only seen them on cats/ dogs.

What is the best think to do??

Frontline. Use the one that is for cats that you squeeze on the neck of cat. Squeeze it on tick. Tick will die. Just keep an eye on place where tick was for any infection afterwards.

A useful bit of kit to have in your tack box is a tick hook. They are made by O'Tom. You can get them at the vets. Insert tick in the prong, twist gently and off pops tick, without leaving its mouth-bits in the animal. Useful for dogs too when you walk in long grass.

when the dog gets them we either light a match and put it out (so still hot) hold it on the tick for few secs and it'll let go and come out.
else you can smear with vaseline so it cant breathe and it'll fall off (takes a bit longer)
dont pull it or the head and legs will be left in, yuck hate the things

My horse covered with them on his nose they are really bad at the moment, even off his willy (ouch), I have a hook but takes ages, did spot on today so hope that works for a bit. It's been a mild winter so they've not died off.

search on google or any other search provider about tick removers, theese are important to use instead of picking the ticks off because picking leaves the head of the tick in creating an open wound which WILL cause discomfort. also you could try tick creams which suffocate the tick untill it drops off hope i helped. x chunk

Best to remove ticks as soon as possible as they can carry lyme's disease. We have loads of them up here because of all the deer. I take them off with tweezers if they are tiny and I also use the tick remover mentionned before on my dog and the horse if they are big enough ( I even use it on myself and my husband -gross I know, but if you are outdoorsie around here you can't avoid them!)

My horse is very sensitive to them, but I would be wary of using a medicine on them that wasn't designed for horses. I have been told garlic in the feed helps. I wouldn't use the match technique, it really could result in an accident.

Has anyone else found that ticks only affect horses with black legs? This seems to be the case at our yard! I find that below the knee/hock they just seem to form a scab which needs washing off, but elsewhere they seem to latch on and if not removed immediately my horse gets a big lump. I usually soak some cotton wool in methylated spirit which I press against the tick for a couple of minutes and then remove it with tweezers. The meths seems to stun the tick (Certainly works on me!)
