They're about folks, found one on one of the dogs plus another huge great thing on the poor cat........... (they've all been done with Advocate in the last few days) - my horses are turned out with sheep, haven't found any nasties YET, but guess need to be prepared coz the horses in the neighbouring yard have had ticks all over their noses in the past.

My traddie boy would be easy enough to spot a tick on as he's got white legs; mare might not be so easy coz she's dark bay tho'.

Does anyone else have a problem with ticks on their horses? If so, how do you deal with it?

i.e. how do you remove the ticks, and how do you prevent a recurrence?

Yes one of mine gets ticks, yet the other 2 he is out with will not get any!?!

I've not found anything that prevents ticks (hoping someone else will answer that! :D )

I do slap on a good covering of vaseline if I find them, but quite often with mine I just find the big lump and scab left by them. I also have those green tick removers and will use these.

My boy reacts quite badly so I put bicarbonate of soda (mixed with a little water) onto the lumpy/gooey/oozey area left. This seems to stop the oozing on mine (which helpfully strips all his hair off his skin!) and then I apply aloe vera gel to hopefully make it nicer again.

Suprisingly mine get his more on his head and above his knees on his legs

My only first-hand dealings with these little blighters was removing a dead one from a stable cat:rolleyes: Mum grew up on a farm and got them all the time - I believe dousing them in alcohol (actual ethanol, or a neutral spirit like vodka would also do) makes them relax the mouthparts and makes them easier to remove. Not had the need to test this myself though (thankfully!). I wonder would a food supplement help repels them - like garlic does for flies...? Just a musing. The fact that some people and animals seem to be affected more than others suggests there's something 'attrative' about certain individuals - smell maybe? Just a musing:)

One of my 5 is really prone to them - especially in his armpits & stifle. I just twist them off anticlockwise & generally they seem to come off intact & then they get stomped on.

the only thing ive heard of working is garlic and teatree oil . feed the garlic and spray with teatree maybe? :)

Butox Swish, 30mls every 6 weeks or so keeps ticks off mine. Without it they can have upwards of 20 latch on over night :(

What she said ^^

My boy had one when I got him, it came out with tweezers and a good twist. I hate them, got obsessive over removing them when we took the dog to the Lake District and did major walks over the mountains. Euw. :( No idea how to prevent them, I would have thought Advocate would do it. Maybe flea spray?

Our dog got one last week and bet happened to be out seeing in of the horses. She told us to put frontline spray on it, couple of hours later had gone
