Has anyone got any special repellents or treatment?
So this morning I've got my boy in and he is covered in lumps with lots of tiny ticks. He's been in the same field for that past 4 months and never had an issue.
I've used a tick hook and managed to get most of them off but there are rather a few that have gone scabby and resembles something of a blotchy welfare case currently. . I've never had a horse get ticks before so looking for recommendations on what to use to stop him getting anymore.

Thanks x

One little tip ...I never use a tic remover..I once saw a video on you tube which was excellent. Just use a finger on top of tic and do several circular motions one way then the other...said tic just drops off..Has worked every time on my dogs. Can't help regarding prevention but I am sure someone will be along to offer advice.

I'm having the same trouble with my mini. He's plagued by them and we've had a hefty vet bill as he's having allergic reactions. Ivermectin wormer is supposed to kill those which are feeding and I've been told that those which bite will drop off if you feed garlic. Gold label louse powder works too but I'm not sure if it's repelling or killing once they've bitten and Power Phaser definitely does seem to work too.

A ball of cotton wool soaked with acetone nail polish remover shifts them faster than you would believe. Don't leave them on the ground though, squash the blighters

When I had my old lad at a yard in the middle of a forest riddled with ticks I used Barricade for treating lice (prescribed by a vet), it had the added bonus of killing off ticks very quickly.

Unfortunately barricade isn't available any more according to my vet, but he gave us deosect instead which is brilliant for flys and lice...

Can check on the tin if it mentions ticks too...

Ticks are the bane of my life! We have an abundance of wild boar and deer here and ticks are unbelievable! It's something we've had to take in to consideration and research quite extensively, some horses I've seen have literally been covered in hundreds of them!

We use Butox as a monthly treatment at the start of tick season. It's not officially licensed for horses, however watered down at the correct ratio, it's the only thing that really works against the amount of ticks we get and the vets are happy to order it in for us.

Once they've had a 2/3 treatments at the start of spring, we make our own spray up based on the herbal one that our vets recommend... which is literally just Tea tree oil and water. Its cheap simple and incredibly effective, and it's just 5% tea tree to whatever volume of water your working with. Spray under the chin, jaw, muzzle and around each coronet band until saturated et voila! The ticks won't touch them. I tend to need to do it once a day where we live, but you could get away with every second day if your in a less tick infested area :)
