Sorry if this turns out to be a bit long winded..

We are going away next month to house sit for some family members. They live in (very) rural Devon, in an area where there is known to be a lot of tics and Lyme disease. Mum's cousin has actually had Lyme disease herself, as have many of her neighbours...guess it could be called a bit of a hot spot!
Anyway, we have an Irish Water Spaniel...so lots of brown curls. He's a bit of a nightmare at times (rescue dog) so although we clip him as much as we can, we cant get near his legs and feet. As i'm writing..wondering whether the extra hair is actually benificial as tics not got such easy access to skin? But anyway, he won't let us check through all his fur to look for them. And by won't let us check....i'm talking very sharp teeth (trust me i know) and when muzzled becomes something possessed!
We're obvioulsy going to head to the vets to get some frontline (or whichever it is that's supposed to prevents tics...can't remember!) but we've used this on him before and he's still picked up the odd tick. Does anyone have any ideas what else we could use? Would an insect/fly repellant type thing help? For both humans and dog i guess? Home made anti-tic recipes? Garlic?

Any help or ideas welcomed!

Hi there are two products I would recommend for ticks.
Advantixs which is a monthly spot on for fleas and ticks is excellent. Just need to be aware if you are giving your pet any other flea/ worm product that it's safe to do so. E.g if you are already using Advocate which is a monthly spot an for fleas and worms you need to wait 2 weeks before using Advantixs.
Seresto collars are for fleas and ticks and are also excellent, these give upto 8 months of use. My parents live on Exmoor and use these and the dogs have no ticks. Again with this product you need to be careful if you are using other products, but your vet will advise.
Hope this helps.

We are having the worst year ever for ticks. i use frontline plus, the spot on version.,every month ..but also use a spray version on the four legs ,a puff on each, for my standard poodle boy.He has full leg hair and this extra bit of spray helps to get all of the ticks he picks up on our walks. I also use a stiff ,hard slicker brush to go through his coat the minute we get back home ,then a flea comb and it gets the new ,live ticks off ...they get dropped straight into a jar of alcohol to kill them. I think the ticks will attach when the dog brushes against the long grass so any coat type is susceptible.
I've tried the seresto collars for our holiday in the warmer areas of Italy ,where they have leishmania and they are effective, but I don't like them for long term use.

As above only Advantix spot-on or Seresto collars actually repel ticks, Frontline etc. take up to a couple of days to kill the ******* off.
