Sorry if this turns out to be a bit long winded..
We are going away next month to house sit for some family members. They live in (very) rural Devon, in an area where there is known to be a lot of tics and Lyme disease. Mum's cousin has actually had Lyme disease herself, as have many of her neighbours...guess it could be called a bit of a hot spot!
Anyway, we have an Irish Water Spaniel...so lots of brown curls. He's a bit of a nightmare at times (rescue dog) so although we clip him as much as we can, we cant get near his legs and feet. As i'm writing..wondering whether the extra hair is actually benificial as tics not got such easy access to skin? But anyway, he won't let us check through all his fur to look for them. And by won't let us check....i'm talking very sharp teeth (trust me i know) and when muzzled becomes something possessed!
We're obvioulsy going to head to the vets to get some frontline (or whichever it is that's supposed to prevents tics...can't remember!) but we've used this on him before and he's still picked up the odd tick. Does anyone have any ideas what else we could use? Would an insect/fly repellant type thing help? For both humans and dog i guess? Home made anti-tic recipes? Garlic?
Any help or ideas welcomed!
