I want to tidy Bean's tail up, but I'm pretty sure she won't stand to have it pulled, she's good with having her mane pulled but doesnt like having her tail touched or pulled about at all really... I have one of those razor comb things and I attacked her mane with that today, but how could I do her tail with that?

How else could I do it or is pulling the only option? If so, any tips for pulling as I've never done it before...

Here is the best pic I could find of her tail

what does a tail looked like once it has been 'done' with a tail rake. Anyone got a piccie? Does it look like a properly pulled tail? It looks like my boy once had a pulled tail several years ago because the top part in shorter than I would expect and it could do with a tidy up

Another vote for a tail rake - you'd need a death wish to consider pulling my mare's tail, but she'll just about put up with a rake.
One of my old yard mates recommended it and used to do a full 'pull' with one on her IDx - looked very smart. I only use it to tidy up because quarter horses are supposed to be reasonably natural - if I do nothing it looks like it belongs to to a woolly mammoth!
Takes quite a long time to do the full job, but you could do it over two or three days.

No solo comb doesnt do tails at all. Ive seen a few done with those rakes, looks ok. IMO you cant beat a pulled tail, if the horse is not good twitch it or get it backed up against a door and stand the other side on a milk crate. Latex gloves and pliers work a treat.

I havnt personally got a tail rake, but I went to clip a horse for some one, who asked me to pull its tail, they then thrust upon me a tail rake and said I had to do it with that. (Not my idea theres)It was made by Smart Tails it was a fine one. Clipper sharp sell smart tails rakes.

ive just ordered 1 of ebay any body got any advice as ive never used 1 before and my cob has a big thick tail!

i used to work at a hunting yard and we used to have someone holding them in the stable with there bum by the door, close the door and stand on something for height!! this is a safe way of doing it if you deciede to pull it!!

Start from the top and take each side of the tail ... use your rake as a comb and comb down each side of the tail ....As you go along , keep checking how even it looks .

Then start at the top of the tail brushing down in a combing motion .

Keep checking it .

Cant really go wrong to be honest .
