I need to keep horsing gear in the car and no matter how I try it always ends up a tip! Anyone manage to organise boots hats etc on a back seat tidily? Dog in hatch so can’t use that. Thanks in advance.

I use boot for saddles / saddle carrier.

I do have a lot of live in stuff that was in the boot. I bought an oversized long black sports back that takes up most of my back seat and the boot stuff is in there. e.g. coats, waterproof trousers, change of clothes, wellingtons etc. It doesnt show up much against the black seats, and hasnt been disturbed. I also have the back of the seat pocket organisers hanging down.

Every 6 months or so I tidy and clean my car and marvel in its new beauty, telling myself I’ll never let it get that bad again…
Ha me too! Its usually the day before we go away on holiday in it. Its vacumed within an inch of its life, the body work is glistening and the dog is strapped into her seatbelt on the back seat amid a load of duvets, pillows and shopping bags containing everything but the kitchen sink (just in case!)

I vowed never to let my car get dirty again, usually it is reasonally fine and maybe a wee bit of dirt on the footwell..

I was getting a lift, not far thankfully, from another fellow horsey girl, she threw the passenger door open and the smell was enough to choke a horse! Seriously wiffy! Too late i stepped in and sat on the passenger seat and suddenly i was up to my shoulders in cans , bottles , old crisp packets takeaway containers and the smell of old pee ??? it gave me the heave so I vowed never to let it get like that

My car is a venerable old Japanese estate car. Battered, scraped exterior, inside, very tidy front and middle. Estate bit at the rear, cluttered, organised, covered with old bath towels, and contains almost everything, apart from vet and farrier, that dog and I will ever need. Dog, on bench seat in the middle, has travel harness on whilst in car, and is usually asleep within five minutes of getting in.
Ratty old estate cars/wagons rule, as long as they are kept in top mechanical/electrical/tyres/windscreen wipers etc order.
On occasion, I have spent more on the car than the horse, who live in palatial splendour on full livery.
I live in Nowheresville Under The Hill, so a reliable and functional car is a necessicity.

Get asking for a boot bag and a hat bag for birthday/xmas. Plastic tub to sit both in.
My hat bag holds all spare hat covers and gloves too - its a good sized bag.

That said, please please don't leave hats in cars in any form of high temps - it can make the poly insides get brittle. I learnt the hard way in 2018 - my hat had to get binned.

No matter how hard you try the bits of shavings, hay and crumbs seem to cling to the carpet in your car and try as I might I just cannot shift them. If I brush them the carpet ends up looking like an afro. The carpet seems impervious to a stiff brush and high powered vacumn.

I got a very VERY rare talking to from the OH about the state of the car about 6 weeks ago when he was too ashamed to take it to the garage before a thorough 2 hour clean and now everything goes in a plastic box in the boot. Unwashed rugs aren't allowed to stay in there overnight anymore either.

We used one of the little metal combs meant for taking cat hair up out of the carpets with a decent level of success. It was a pain in the proverbial but it did work!

Like Ratface, I have a battered old Japanese estate which does everything from harrowing fields to carting 3 dogs and 2 boys about. I love it that it’s so old and tatty I don’t have to care about cleaning it, and if it happens to have a gate slam shut on it, or I open the door into something (which I keep doing after I had a wall rebuilt in a different place)… well, I don’t worry about it. I do have a boot tray so that I can occasionally tip out the hay and hair easily but that’s about as much cleaning as I ever do. I need the boot for dogs and most of the backseat for boys, so the passenger seat and footwell are used for everything else. A crate would be a good plan.

Would one of those dog hammocks in the back seat area be good, not for the dog but to chuck it all in contained and then if needed you could just remove the whole lot to hopefully clean seats and foot wells?

Well I should have taken a pic but it doesn’t look that impressive! Found a plastic box with lid for boots and chaps. Helmet back in its hat bag. Noted the comment about it being in the heat. I am sue a new one soon anyway. All my reusable carrier bags tamed! It does look better. Thanks for suggestions.

LOL. That's it.

My saddest moment today was finding a croissant in the gear soup that covers the back seat, thinking, "Score! Lunch!" I was between my two yards. The croissant was very stale. Well on its way to becoming petrified. Did I throw it out? Of course not. Who does that? I put it back on top of Hermosa's quarter sheet.

My OH despairs. I told him this and he said,"Why did you put it back?!!"

I said, "I don't know why I do these things."
