So Ive begun the dreaded task of tidying my tack room. We're talking 10 years of dust and cobwebs (spiders are the reason I never do a proper tidy up!). Big chests pull of rugs I havent taken out in years. Any particular tips you guys have for storage etc.? I have a large stable (18ft x 18ft), Ive got some plastic chests, plastic drawer units and just built a shelving unit yesterday. Planning to put all winter rugs away into the chests, bottles/sprays will go neatly onto the shelving racks. Have old feed bins for feed in the corner. Rugs I hang off guttering roped from the ceiling. Are there any particular ways to use space you find useful?

Is facebook marketplace the best place to advertise random bits of equipment (I have old bridles, rugs which may need fixing, bits, loads of old but very usable saddlecloths, tack room fittings like saddle racks (which I dont use as keep those in the house) etc.)? Also how do you all store things like leatherwork (spare nosebands/bridles) where they dont go mouldy? Would those bags that are vacuum closed the best method?

I also have a mouldy saddle I need help with - I need to sell it, but its got mouldy looking patches all over it but I cannot get it off no matter how / what I scrub with. Im thinking black shoe polish might dye it back to its original... or is that a big no no? Its only a kids saddle worth around £150 (I wouldnt suggest anything risky on an expensive saddle!).

FB marketplace is likely to be a lot of hassle for anything that you're only looking for a few quid for (or that's been my experience) so I'd be inclined to get all the bits you want rid of together and try a car boot sale.
I've not tried it myself, but I've heard tales of boot polish ruining breeches when applied to saddles, so I'm not sure it's something I'd try- although if you're selling it that might become someone else's problem 😆 have you tried something like neatsfoot oil? I know it's not recommended for modern leather, but it does darken leather a bit.
I'd love to know if there's a way to stop tack going mouldy/dry in storage, I'm fed up of cleaning things just to put them away again!

I got some handy, cheap storage bags off amazon to put my rugs in that stop the spiders from nesting in them. Is there still mould on the saddle or is it just the leather got discolored?

Also highly recommend getting a pressure sprayer to get the whole room fresh, clean and cobweb free! I've sold on marketplace with mixed success. You can advertise the nice things you have individually priced and then rest of it as a job lot!

I have my spare nosebands/ bridle parts in a cloth bag that a fancy handbag came in, think it's cotton but perhaps someone knows for certain???
They are cleaned and stored as their component parts then the bag is in a plastic storage box with other stuff like bits and boots.

Wear a face mask, and drag everything outside to sort. The dust can be pretty bad for lungs to deal with........says she, who has ended up at the GP for antibiotics after inhaling stable dust a month ago doing a major spring clean!

If you have a nifty terrier or cat that likes killing anything that moves, have them on standby to deal with the spiders. Worked for me when clearing out my shed a few months ago - all it takes is one high pitched shriek from me and the dog comes running, to kill the Things 😂
