Just booked my mare in for a tie back at newmarket at the beginning of september :(

Just wanted to know if anyone had a horse which has has this procedure. I've been looking on the internet and obviously talked to my vet but just wanted some real life experience regarding recovery time/risk of infection/effectiveness etc.

Thanks

Hi Illy, My horse had a tie back 2 weeks ago! He is doing very well. No sign of infection. He has to stand in for another 2 weeks then out for 8 weeks before I bring him back into work. I am very happy with the way the Op went.

Are you getting a hob day done aswell?

Yes she will have both done. The vet wanted to do a hobday last winter but he also said she would need a tie back in the future so i decided to wait and get them both done together. She has been eventing this year with no problem until the last few weeks where she has gone down hill quite rapidly which is what the vet said would happen.

So glad that yours went well and is recovering ok. Quite glad to hear only 4weeks box rest - that was my biggest concern as my mare has had a yr on box rest in the past and i feel bad putting her through it again! Hope your horse continues to make a good recovery and you've made me feel better about the op - thanks!

Mine was done two years ago and hasn't looked back. He can hunt, jump, and do everything. He still breathes noisily but he's getting plenty of oxygen so I don't care about that. It was easy, just six weeks and back in work. If you are having a laser hobday you'll only need two weeks in a box, then four weeks on restricted turnout in a small pen. Actually I rode at five weeks in walk, and he was fine. Good luck!

Horse on my yard had both done this spring. His was lazer surgery, and now, some two months on you wouldn't know anything had been done.

He's now out for the summer, to be brought back in to work at the beginning of the Autum.

Horse has done really, really well.

Hi my horse had a tie back and hobday on 14th June, he went back to the vets yesterday to be rescoped and all looks well.

He has had 4 weeks complete box rest and has just started going on the walker (10 mins twice per day). He has now been given the all clear to be turned out in a small paddock. He had an open wound which required cleaning twice a day this was really grim to begin with but I was amazed how quickly this healed it was visably smalller everday and has now closed up completely.

I was warned that after surgery he may develop a cough especially when he is eating. I have made sure his feed is fed damp and from the floor and he seems to be doing fine.

I hope everything goes well with your horse. Which vets are you using in Newmarket?

Thanks, she will be going to Rossdales and Tim Greet will be doing the operation. Hope mine goes as well as yours has done. Thanks to everyone for their stories, you've made me feel a whole lot better!

my old boy had it done over two years ago, it was amazing how quick he was better than his normal self x
good luck and i hope it all goes wellX P.S. we had no cough at all xx

Mine doesn't cough and I don't even have to feed him from the floor and I can feed him dry pony cubes too :)

my youngchap had both done last october he is a new horse as a result.

I feed as normal, he does not cough at all, you can see and hear nothing so would not know he ever had problems.

I found the operation stressful as you are in essense sending a healthy animal under the knife, however I need not have worried he was groggy after for only one day, the hole under his chin ( the hobday bit ) was disgusting, you have to clean it ( only wiping it with hibiscrub ) daily however it was healed within two weeks.

He was on box rest for four weeks then he went out for walks ( not fun on a horse that has been box rested for four weeks he was a little git) for another two weeks, and then he was allowed out in a small paddock for a further couple of weeks.
He was not to canter for 6 weeks. He hated the box rest but it was well worth doing as the difference is amazing.
You used to hear him from way off when cantering now just silence.

good luck if you need any advice or reassurance feel free to pm me

This isnt quite along lines of other replies but our boy had it done when racing with previous owner with hobdaying and is fine able to do all we want and although he cannot niegh properly he can still be heard calling for our mare hoarsely lol xx

Thanks so much for all your replies.

I know there is risk involved with any op, but hearing all your stories has made me realise I have made the right decision to go for it and hopefully my mare will come back better than ever, and she will be happy to be able to breathe properly again!

I used to ride a racehorse that had the opp, although came over from New Zeland so it was done over there but he's always been ok and didnt effect his career over here, wouldn't of known once he came out of racing.
