I have an ex racer who had a tie back op as a two year old. In the past two weeks he has had an increasing amount of discharge from his nose after coming in from the field(only way I can describe it is like watery grass ie bright green!) and over the past couple of days has started to cough when in his stable. It doesn't seem to be exercise related as he has a couple of coughs at the beginning of exercise and then will work quite happily. The cough also isn't repetative as such as he will do one then in five minutes or so will do another (maybe trying to clear his throat?) also the discharge doesn't occur to anywhere near the degree that it does when he comes in from the field. He is on a shavings bed with soaked hay and well dampened feed with equimins airways supplement ,nowhere near hay barns etc and is turned out for anywhere between 7-10 hours a day. Not sure whether I'm being a bit paranoid but I ahve no expierience of this condition or complications with it. Vet is out tomorrow but really just wanted some advice before I get into some investigation

From my experience it sounds like food is aspirating into his windpipe.
The signs you describe are the first one Spider had, although his started a few weeks after his tieback was done. He was def worse with grass than hay or hard feed. The food coming down his nose is because it is somehow going the wrong way. The larynx being open means this is possible. The coughing is likely to be him trying to clear the food from the windpipe.
The vet would be my first suggestion (which you've already arranged) I would ask for him to be scoped, so you can see what's going on with the larynx & look down his windpipe to see what's in it.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.
