If viewing a horse that had this operation in the past, would it put you off buying it? Gorgeous animal, but by no means cheap... I've never had a horse with resp problems (this is a bigger pony than I've ever had, I'm used to < 16hh)

Just any info or experiences would be loved!
 
How long ago did it have the operation, and has it done any competing since?

It can be a very successful operation, but it can also need redoing sometimes. Your insurance would probably exclude any future wind related problems...

My friend bought a horse that had wind problems, and was never picked up on at the vetting. It has recently had the operation as its wind got worse and worse. They paid a lot for it. I think that the price should be cheaper for a horse like this...

What sort of price is it, and what has it done?
 
My lad had a tieback op about a year before I bought him (whilst he was racing). You would never know at all now (apart from a silly neigh) and he breathes normally with no noise whilst galloping and recovers very quickly from fast work. We do a lot of XC and it has never been an issue at all.

I understand that some operations aren't as successful but the fact that the horse you're looking at has had the op and the results can be seen by a vet would not ring too many alarm bells to me.
 
I have just had one of mine done. It has not effected him in any way at all, only points to remember are:
- Must always be fed from the floor
- Not allowed Sugar Beet

I assume the owners will tell you this if indeed you decide to buy him. If he is the horse of your dreams make sure you ask questions such as:
- What work has he done since the op?
- Has it effected his ability to work?
- Have they noticed any negative effects to his work?
- Has he a history of coughing during exercise?

Maybe if your really not sure, get him scoped (costs approx £100) then your vets will be able to tell you exactly whats going on inside.

It is important to remember that this isn't a 'respiratory' problem as such, more a 'wind' problem, ie he won't be effected by dust etc. Normally once its has been done and deemed successful you shouldn't notice any difference at all - except the silly, whispy neigh they are left with!
