Tiger attack- One dead, two injured.

I have heard the police are investigating the possibility that the boys may have been teasing the tiger, causing her to jump the moat and fence. I think they have found a human footprint inside the enclosure. That sounds plausible as I don't think a well fed tiger that had been born and raised in captivity would just suddenly take a notion to jump a considerable barrier and start attacking people but one that had been teased just might. People tend to forget that these aren't great big kitty cats. As far as tigers eating people, don't wild tigers in India occasionally make off with a villager, especially if the tiger is ill or old and can't hunt proper prey?

Yes, occasionally being the optimum word! Its not a usual occurrence.

WRB - of course the tigers are fenced in for a reason - they are big dangerous wild animals, and it would be foolish not to. Similarly people do not generally go swimming with Great White sharks, despite the fact that they rarely attack people on purpose. That doesn't mean that humans are tigers' natural prey or that they would normally go on a killing spree unless provoked. It is not natural behaviour. I don't need my head examined thanks.

If the cat was being teased that would be a very plausable explanation. Poor thing.

'In the wild tigers can leap as high as 5m (16ft) and as far as 9 - 10m (30 - 33ft) making them one of the highest jumping mammals' (Wikipaedia and Zoo Atlanta sources).
'Two days after the cat (Tatiana) escaped and attacked the men, San Francisco Zoo Director Manuel Mollinedo acknowledged that the wall of the tiger's enclosure was only 12.5 feet high, well below the 16.4ft minimum height suggested by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' (Fox News).
Anyone see a problem?

No-one said humans were a tigers natural prey did they? Or are we reading different threads?

[/ QUOTE ]

Humans may not be a natural prey item for large cats due to lack of availability/risk to cat.
Personally, I wouldn't rely on that fact too heavily though, particularly when faced with large carnivores of any species.

No, but earlier in the thread, people kept saying the tiger was exhibiting natural behaviour.
[ QUOTE ]
the tiger appeared to have acted by its natural instincts

[/ QUOTE ]

My point is that it is not normal for a cat to go on a killing spree for no reason. Generally they do not attack and kill things just because they can - only under provocation or for self defence. If the tiger was provoked I can see why it happened.

Yes it is interesting that the tiger didn't actually eat any of the people (sick thought i know) but spiral is right - tigers just simply do not kill for fun - they kill to protect their territory, their mates and for food. So the question is why this animal felt the need to jump out of its enclosure and kill and injure 3 people without actually eating them and without them having provoked or threatened the animal?? (2 were in a cafe!)

I disagree completely. Have you never seen a domestic cat kill a bird and then play with it before dumping it?

[ QUOTE ]
A bit of an aside, but here is the full video of the tiger attack on mahout, from which WelshRareBit posted the tiger jump clip; I wondered if the poor guy survived; looks like he did (& the tiger too).

[/ QUOTE ]

But where? Have you been drinking already?

Yes its there.
Alas I have not been drinking again yet as all that is left is the mulled wine, which is so indescribably horrible (Buckies AND some) that I need to get drunk to be able to drink it.

Yes I have. But we are not discussing domestic cats here. Even domestic cats rarely attack one animal and then go on immediately to maul 2 or 3 others. This doesn't strike me as normal hunting behaviour for a cat [and this is a tiger, not a domestic cat] - this seems to be a display of aggression and the question is what would prompt an attack of this kind. Its not the normal thing for a tiger to jump out of its enclosure and kill at random.

I can beat that...I once made punch out of a lead painted bowl and gave an entire Hogmanay party lead poisoning...

A great way of defusing family arguments & diverting Great Uncle Arthur's Inheritance, as long as you didn't drink yourself... Shilasdair, I'm fascinated now... Was that just before you bought the new house, car and string of racehorses?

I have no house, car, or string of racehorses.
I think, however, the moral of my tale is 'Don't pick drinking vessels out of skips'

Hang on...is that the drinking vessel I made. You calling my stained glass a poof?

[/ QUOTE ]

Normally I don't use drinking vessels....I go straight to source, as it were...

But surely you go straight to the vessel. Or do you prefer an artery?

[/ QUOTE ]

An artery is easier....yes...I see your point about the human being a 'vessel' too. Perhaps I shouldn't discuss this further...lest the Pope is around?

Ha ha let's hope he is. That would knock him off his perch pretty quick. I wonder how much papal blood goes for on the erm "black" market.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ooooh, no...I'm sure it would be poisonous to me.
Garlic is bad enough for us, you know...

Perhaps if you boiled it up? I seem to remember seeing somewhere that "boiling impairs flavour" It would get rifd of the goodness for sure. So then we would be left with any residual nastiness that the pope was hiding. I think that would be worth having.

But is that not how you 'condense' things.....? Residual nastiness does sound fine....but part of me suspects you are trying to trick me into ingesting poisons...
