Hi.

I have posted a lot recently regarding my on/off lame horse and have finally(I think) got to the bottom of it. X-rays of hock today showed the lower joint not being as clear as it should be.

Vet said it didn't look like a spavin, just bony changes. My understanding of Spavins was that they are degenerative bony changes- so could this be the start of a spavin, or have I got that wrong?

She is only 5 and hasn't worked hard at all. She is 1/10 lame after flexion, slightly worse on a small circle on concrete but I've noticed it mainly in canter-she doesn't want to go on the correct lead which isn't like her at all.

Vet has recommended Tildren for bone remodelling. I have read up a lot on Internet and seems that Tilden does have better outcome if given at the start of a problem(she only showed signs of laneness at Xmas) rather than when its been ongoing so that's a positive.

I have her insured so cost not a problem, but realise Tildren is expensive and doesn't always work on a long term basis.

Has anyone had the same issues and what were results? Or same problem with different treatment?
I bought this mare to event and she has amazing potential and after my last horse having to retire as a 6yo with SI issues I'm just gutted that this is happening all over again! Feels like I am cursed!

Any help would be really appreciated!!

Your horse sounds just like me, bony changes and 1/10 lame.

She first has injections directly into the hock but 12months later still changes, had the tildren around September last year and haven't look back, she's like a different horse :D

My sister's horse had tildrin into his hocks for arthritis. Can't remember if it did anything though, sorry :p He had a year off for it, was coming back into work nice and sound and then did both back suspensories. Now a handsome field ornament!

How easy is it to keep them comfortable as field ornaments?

Vet is almost certain my 14yo HW has spavins come & in his case injecting hocks is a no-go & Danilon questionable (past history of ulcers, doesn't seem to tolerate Danilon even at a low dose at all well) & I have severe doubts about Tildren too as I think it's given by drip isn't it? Getting x-rays Thursday am.

Currently on Cortaflex, just started Boswellia & have some rosehips to try too. Vet is talking about remedial shoeing maybe helping - thank God for a good farrier! - & that green lipped mussel extract may help. Any ideas?

Sorry to hijack the thread, I hope your mare can be helped x

My boy was maintained with cortaflex and nobute and ridden for a few years, but retired at 8 as a field ornament He's on danilon and if the ground is harder or he looks sore, he has a swinging leg lameness, i sometimes up his dose. At the moment he's comfortable and 14yrs he has been fine on his danilon

Mafia quite a few years ago had two courses of Tildren in her right hock for arthritis. Although it is not a permanent fix she is great apart from the odd stiff day. She is 20 now.

we had slightly different issues ... big boy of 14, hocks with arthritis, back muscles under-developed and very tight. We have just had second Tildren infusion in 5 months ... first time he had steroid injection into hocks as well, has been much more comfortable since. We have also combined with physiotherapy to loosen the muscles and try to get him straight. Although I can't "see" the benefit, I have taken advice from experts and think it must be doing something good (combined with the other treatments). Only concern was a possible reaction to first treatment... sensitive lumps in his neck and side, I was told that the human version of Tildren has been withdrawn as was possible it caused nerve damage so I was concerned that this might be the equine equivalent. However I've no conclusive evidence that that's the case, and I think that on probability, having a couple of doses does more good than not. Take care of your horse - they are precious.

Thanks for replies everyone. Those horses who have had the Tildren seem to be older- has anyone had the same problem in a younger horse (5). I am hoping as she is young and vet reckons bony changes have only just begun (she was completely fine and competing lightly last winter) that maybe there is some hope?

My then 14yo had Tildren in September, after steroid injections last jan!
For different issues (front leg problems) now have a new horse :) she was also on bute before and that has been stopped for a few months now! In my horses case, I can't rate Tildren enough!

Our boy was first diagnosed with changes at 6, had steriods and then the Tildren. The Tildren did seem to work for him, also gave him Cortaflex throughout. We had him PTS last year but that was due to other issues.

Thanks guys its good to hear some positive stories. She had treatment on Friday, no signs of colic and now its just a waiting game!! Ive been advised to keep her on rest for 3 weeks before re assessing. What did you do after treatment??

I was told to work my mare, she had 2 days off then straight back into work! But I guess it depends on the horses circumstances :)
