My horse just got diagnosed with PSD (basically done his hind suspensory ligament!). Been considering all my options and not really happy about putting him through the surgery (he is very nervy/tense horse and nerve blocking just about upset him for a week after!).

Anyway shock wave is only 40% successful so wont bother with that. Other options were cortasone injections or tildren (equidronate) both are 50% successful.

Because he has over compensated everywhere else vet said the tildren option would be good as would help the rest of him.

Anyone experienced tildren (equidronate)? what was it used for? I understand there is a risk of collic, did this happen? was it successful?

Thank you!

Hi,

My lovley chap had a Tildren drip almost 8 weeks ago now. He has a bony spur above the navicular bursa plus some ringbone & arthritic changes.

I was really worried about the colic risk but the vet gave him an injection to deal with that and he was fine. He was very wet in his stable overnight but other than that, no problems.

I haven't seen any improvement at all I'm afraid but I know other people on here have had some great results.

Sorry not much help but I was so scared about the side effects and want to reassure you that, in my one experience, they weren't a problem :)

I had tildren for my boy three times in the space of a year for bone spavin. If the vet infuses it slowly (over 3/4 hour) there is very little colic risk (something like 7%) and even then its only low grade spasmodic colic. If its pushed through in under 30 mins there is a very good risk. Here is a brilliant fact sheet i always recommend people read: http://www.georgevetgroup.co.uk/pdf's/equine_factsheets/TILDRENFACTSHEET.pdf The risk of heart attack with a horse that has cardiac arrythmia is even lower (0.3%) I think I remember reading. Both were a cause of concern to me at the time as my horse has 2nd degree heart block which is considered an arrythmia and also is very colic prone. All three occassions he was fine although he was very down afterwards for a few hours and he wee'd for England!:D

It was definetely worth it though

My lad has exactly this.
he has done really well on the injections so the tildren is planned later on.

Vet has reasured me the risks arnt bad and out way the potential benifits.

Thank you all :)

I have now decided to go with an operation for my boys suspensory ligament injury. As much as I am petrified about an operation it is the best long term solution hopefully.

Also could not find ANYONE that had tildren for his issue and I like to read up on things first.

My boy had tildren nearly 2 months ago for bone spavin and is nearly 100% sound, he's improved brilliantly, I'm really pleased with it and he had no side effects

My horse has PSD and had Tildren 2 weeks ago so still awaiting effect, but he has had Tildren twice before for unexplained lameness in his front shoulder area with 100% success both times so all fingers are crossed. My vet always administers anti spasmodic drugs and he has never had any problems from it.

Has the surgery worked ??

My horse had Tildren for spavins and when her hocks were x-rayed a year later there had been a huge improvement. My vet gave an antispasmodic before the Tildren to help prevent colic.

I would definitely use Tildren again.

Hello!

Used to work in an equine hospital and know friends whose horses have had tildren. Mostly used for navicular disease and bone spavin, not heard of it used in PSD but I can see why it's been suggested - tildren normalises bone turnover so tildren will have an effect on where the bone is remodelling at the top of your horse's cannon bone. Not sure that it will do much for the actually ligament damage though, but don't hold me to that!! In terms of colic risk, I agree with others when they say it should be given over about 45 mins - and someone will be there keeping an eye on your horse whilst he is having it.

What surgery are you going for? If your horse is having a neurectomy it should do the trick - providing your vet has proven that is where the majority of the pain is coming from.

Good luck!

!

I agree, I thought it was for navicular and bone spavin only although recently I've heard it used for coffin joint disease too.

thanks for your messages.

My horse had the surgery done on 3 November for his PSD. He is now on box rest and in hand walking. Can get on end of Jan.

Do not know whether op has worked yet as will only know when he is back in full work. As he was only 1/10 lame on tight circle in trot.

All has gone well so far, so fingers crossed :)
