Yes totally! Just mind that you're not over feeding if you have been riding a little less with the bad weather, and maybe lunge to take the edge off first? My girl started jumping at things she would usually not even look at when the weather got bad, but i think she just has a little too much energy. I changed her feed and cut it down, and got her out as much as poss. Now she's back in full work (albeit only for a week or two), she is feeling a lot more like her old self. p.s I know it sounds obvious but since she has started ding it, still try to treat her normally and not 'anticipate' things now or she will feel your tension and maybe feel like her behaviour is justified. Hope this helps! : )
Absolutley, I think it's the cold weather and the lack of work. I used to ride regualrily at a riding school before getting my own, they always warned clients hacking out in cold weather not to expect a plod. I used to ride the calmist bomb proof horse but during a cold spell he could always but in a good buck and had a tendancy to fight for his head. My own just seems more jumpy. Ive no idea why though.
Glad it's not just mine then...he's not drastically horrendous or anything just sharper, he's gone from one that my daughter can plod about on, to one that seems on edge....I do understand that his turnout is limited and hasn't been worked as much because of snow, ice and now fog...but i was just wanting reassurance that he is likely to return to the lovely laid back boy he was in the summer!!! I'm not a first time horse owner, but have been out of the game for a few years so feeling like a novice at the mo!!
Yep - mine has been full of beans this week but its been getting worse rather than better! I rode her for the first time since november last tuesday - went in the school and she was good as gold. Wed and Thurs went for short hacks with a friend - good as gold. Friday hacked alone - good as gold. Sat - hacked with friend again and she took a dislike to YO tractor (which she sees every day) and we bounced sideways down the track on the way home. Yesterday we hacked out again and she heard some kids and dogs coming and started bouncing and head tossing. Today i was riding on my own so thought I'd play safe and go in the school. All went well until the YO came past on the tractor and that was her off again!
I think they think spring is here. I am wondering if it's because they've been getting some grass this week for the first time since november. It definitely feels feed related.
Glad to hear others are in the same boat - makes me feel a bit better. Hold on tight everyone and don't be ashamed to grab some mane!
