My horse had mild colic Wednesday night, we had been out hunting and I think he just got in a bit of a tizzy, even though he goes every week! Within 10 mins of some painkillers he was right as rain, and passed droppings. He has been fine since.

How long do people give their horses off work following colic? I am nervous to get back on in case it happens again!

I had a similar issue with mine last Tuesday. Gave him the day off the next day and a gentle work out in the school Thursday.. But my vet happened to be on the yard again to see another horse on the Thursday ... Asked how my boy was and said I should have given him some gentle work on the Wednesday to keep him moving! Based in that advice, the answer would be to keep him working, but take it steady for a few days. He's now fine, but I'm now lame ... But that's another story ....

Gentle work as soon as possible really :) my mare was a bit off for a few days after she had spasmodic colic, vet told me to just take her out and let her go her own pace!
When she had an impaction though it hit her hard and she had about 2 weeks off, she had the odd 10 minute wander up the lane (inhand) but even that exhausted her it was more to keep her moving and keep her gut moving than anything else!
Just play it by ear and judge it by how your horse is, no right or wrong time imo :)

Mine had colic last wintet and spent a couple of nights in hospital then was told day he came home to work him as soon as to keep everything moving along

I had a similar experience with mine a couple of weeks ago after she got unusally excited / tense out hacking. Vet said go cautious for at least a couple of days in case there was a low level virus which combined with the exertion of exercise caused the mild colic.

I decided on plenty of turnout and a couple of good trots in hand morning and evening but didn't ride or do normal exercise for 3 days. Then I bought her back into work gently and she seems fine again now.

My shettie had a spasmodic colic a few weeks ago. She recovered within 15 mins of getting the injection, then two hours later it happened again so got another injection. Then she was fine for two days then she colicked again. I waited three days to see if it happened again (frosty hay/grass caused it) and as she didn't colic again she was back in gentle work on the fourth day.

It's one of these things that affects each horse differently, so just play it by ear :)

I was advised to still work him, just a bit steadier for a few days, then kick on as normal :) this was after quite a severe bout of spasmodic colic
