Both horse and rug have faded a bit but the expression remains the same! 14 year old Granny (on the day I got her) and nearly 23 year old Granny today. I knew as I was tucking her in tonight that I'd seen the picture before. The rug was too big then, it's way too big now as she's struggling to hold weight this winter ☹. I changed it after the picture. I kind of wish I could pause time sometimes.

I think I'm feeling quite melancholy at the moment cos she's not doing so great this winter. And it's like over 8 years, so much stuff has happened, and there she is still stood in her stable (albeit a different one, after many other different ones) eating her hay and her chaff and regarding me with that same slightly disdainful look. And I am sad because she won't be there forever and I'm really feeling that right now. But I'm happy too because she exists and we build that weird horse-human bond despite the disdainful looks. And and ... 😂 I don't know what my point is. It's a rubbish photo of an old horse getting older really! It just stuck me.

What is it about horses?

Struck a real cord with me this morning as I turned out my 26 year old - my friend of 15 years. He was a bit slower and I had that gut punch feeling that he was starting to get on a bit. I lost his companion and my friend of 17 years back in Feb. Its hit us both very hard but I am trying to remember all our adventures and how much I loved him and felt loved back by him. I was truly the luckiest girl in the world. The bond between us and our horses is incredible and how lucky is your beautiful girl to have someone who loves her so much. Enjoy every minute you have with her. Shes gorgeous. And you can never have enough photos xxx

Thanks for your kind words everyone. x

Thanks Cortez... she sorted me out a bit eh? Bless her, she was such a dragon to ride! Never dangerous, never bucked or ran off or anything like that, but if you didn't get it right then she wasn't playing. Taught me an awful lot! However if you went for a hack on the buckle she would look after you no fear. It was posting those pictures that got me a bit retrospective!

I'm going to be getting some disdain tonight though after daring to make her have a day in the field in the weather today! 😂

I’ve had my boy for 12 years now, he was a young ex racer when I first got him. Now he’s turning 21 and has had arthritis for a while now. This summer he struggled in the heat and started to just look old. Clicks now in the cold. But he is still so handsome. Just grateful to have him as he had a brain abscess 2 years ago that he was lucky to survive and lost his only 7 year old pony friend last week

Sometimes when I look at my old horse and think of all the money I spend on vets bills, bute, supplements I wonder. And when I see my friends going off competing on their horses I get a little bit of envy come over me and pine for the days when we used to go out and have so much fun when all we can do now is hack. Then there will be the odd time when I'll have a sneaky peak at the for sale pages at the back of H&H and I get a little tingle of excitement for future dreams and hopes. And then I stop and take a step back and think....stop being so selfish. You know what guys...? I'd rather have my old horse with all her issues than a new model as I have so much love for her and to me, she really is irreplaceable and the epitome of everything a horse should be and more. I really am very lucky.

My old guy was staring to show lameness issues at 24 and I questioned the future at that point. At 32 he's pretty much sound, needing more feed than he used to but holding his own. Every winter I think is this the one but he then seems to pick up the next winter. This year has been harder weight wise I believe due to the lack of grass over summer but whilst they are still comfortable and happy I try not to think to far ahead and enjoy everyday we have our best pals around. You may find as I have that they suprise you
