Hi,

This is not a post I take lightly....and I am not looking for any kind of sympathy....but I would value people's thoughts....

On and off for last 30 years I have suffered quite serious illnesses which in some cases have needed operations....and I once again find myself in a debilitating recurring illness...

I have had many horses over the years and lots of fun and heartache......and in 2015 gained another horse after losing two ....each in difficult circumstances.

I have another horse now.....whom I adore.....but have had little chance to ride through illness.....

I seem to have completely lost my mojo and the light at the end of the tunnel seems to have been switched off..lol :) and I am wondering if in fact it is time to give up horses and move to something else.....

Has anyone any experiences of going through this?

Thanks in advance...

Big question... Do you enjoy being around your horse? If so ... keep it and enjoy the time that you can be with him/her. If not ...move on..

I am sorry to hear of your difficulties.

I sold up and gave up for 5 years after injury. I did not think I would be fit again, so having one seemed.... silly/ upsetting/ wasteful/ expensive/ rubbing my nose in it/ overwhelming/ tiring..... delete as necessary, but in my case they were all true.

As to the future, if you are unsure I would say leave it until at least summer, when horse owning is much easier anyway.

If you are sure about giving up horses, then I would sell. It does not mean never having another, just that you are not enjoying having one now. Nothing to stop you buying again in a couple of years if your circumstances change.

You say you adore your horse, but have not been able to ride. I am sure your horse does not care if he/she is ridden at all. If you can't bear to part with your horse then maybe a loan/ share could work?

For me giving up for a while was the best thing I did. I knew I was ready to start again when I started to ride other people's horses, and after a while that was not enough any more. I also realised that although I did have more time and money, it was not as enjoyable as I thought!

Sorry you're unwell, I hope your situation improves no matter what you decide.

Horses can be a huge emotional, financial and physical drain but they can also give us a reason to get up and get going when little else can and provide an escape from every day hum drum and an emotional outlet too. Amongst many other things. So pros and cons to giving them up. This is the most rubbish time of year for owners regardless of health issues.

If I were you I'd hang in there until the better spring weather and review things then with a hard head remembering winter will inevitably come round again. If your mojo has not returned or the though of another winter fills you with dread then its a good time to sell too.

Best wishes no matter what you decide :)

At this time of year, even the most enthusiastic owners often lose their spark. Are there ways of lightening your workload while you are so unwell? It is often said on this forum that relationships should add something to your life and make you happy, the same thing applies to horses. If they still give you joy, then there will be ways through this dark period. If they are dragging you down too much, then it may be best to move on for now.
