Hi guys, it's getting awful messy in the current ' summer' paddocks .Is it too early to move them to the winter one which now has a good 7 inches of grass growth before we've even had a frost ? However they are starting to become a little mischievous leaning on/over/breaking fences etc. I am worried if they go from short grass to long grass it may cause colic. The welsh will be ok i'm sure but the little NF is a piggy and will gorge herself . I could put them out there for an hour or so gradually but may struggle to catch said piggy NF . Things were different for us last year so i don't know whats best to do, this weekend their routines will change from being out at night to out in the day seeing as the clocks change too. Any advice gratefully received:)

I usually give them a couple of hours each day in the new paddock - increasing over a week or so until they switch properly. I know some people think this excessive but I've had one with (thankfully very mild) colic from a straight swap so won't risk it again! Could you leave a headcollar (either thin leather or fieldsafe type would be best) on the NF if you're worried about catching her again?

Thanks Celia, yes i would leave a headcollar on, also thinking maybe put a muzzle on her ? We have one but she's never worn it, she'll object no doubt !

I certainly dont think youre excessive celia. You gradually change feed over a period of time so why not change grass that way :) spot on in my eyes :)

having just had a colic episode when one of mine jumped over the electric fence and pigged out all night on the winter paddock, I would say be careful ! I have turned mine out now on winter pasture with muzzles on as didn't want the same thing happening again. However they are in at night as wont leave muzzles on 24 hours

Mine have been going in the winter paddock for a few hours during the day and then they are back in the barer paddock at night. Seems to be working well.
