Ive just done a 4 hour round trip to look at a horse that was a complete waste of my time.
It was advertised on Horse Quest 16.2hh 8 yrs hunter, with a picture, looked a nice type. I rang about it asked all my questions etc and specifically asked if it have any lumps, bumps, blemishes, vices the woman assured me it had no lumps or bumps.
So I got there they pulled it out of stable, to be fair it was a very nice pattern of a horse.
Until I spotted a large boney lump on the inside of its hock, I, at this point suspected a fused bone spavin, although it trotted up sound it was VERY prominent and noticable from the front.
I was furious I told them I wasnt interested and didnt want to see it ridden as I wasnt happy about the lump. Then I turned to the woman and said "Especially as I asked you about lumps"
Man replied "oh its only a little lump we didnt think that counted"
My eye sight is not the best and I could see it 20 yards away!
Iam so cross, why waste my time.
Rant over, glass of wine and chocolate cake for everyone.
If anyone is thinking of looking at it pm me and I will tell you which one it is on Horse Quest.

I am horse shopping at the moment. It is a tough business. The one's I like all seem to be 2 hours+ drive away from me.

I hopefully will never have to look for horses again. I went up and down the country looking at all sorts of rubbish. I had specific things in mind, age ability etc. I had one that no one would ride! I got on it ( I know!!!) and it rodeo'd round the arena. Didn't buy that one! lol. Had dodgy passports, lumps and bumps, breathing prob etc. I ended up buying a youngster as i got fed up with all the horses that where on offer.
Its a minefield!! You have my sympathy

Did they think you wouldnt notice it? Idiots!!

My pony has a lump on his hock that is absolutely nothing scary and shouldnt cause him any problems or lameness, yet i would be quite happy to tell people if i was selling him as it would rule him out for showing of course. If the horse has obvious lumps or blemishes it should be mentioned in the advert IMO.

OMG, that sounds awful! I showed my horse yesterday and he behaved terribly, most out of character and I felt dreadful. If anyone asked me something about him and I thought the answer would put them off I would answer truthfully because they are not stupid and it is fairly obvious that they are asking for a reason! Mine has lumps and bumps all over and if someone asked me about lumps or blemishes I would assume they wanted something to show or something (therefore absolutely no point in coming to see my "horsie worsie").

That is why I get into such a panic before anyone comes to see him!!

I dont want it to show, just hunting I dont mind a lump that has been caused by a knock or some thing but IMO this bone spavin would affect soundness, especially as hunting is hard on joints so they need to be as sound as possible from the start. But more so I was buying it with the intention of selling on during hunting so it has to be perfect.

people simply don't tell the truth much of the time. If they did, perhaps their horses would sell quicker ? To the right home. sm x

I feel your pain! When I was looking (I did eventualy find a fantastic mare so there is a happy ending!) I was shocked at the number of people that just lied outright! Wrong height, pics several years old, nothing like the breed claimed, horse with a virus so was snotty and coughy, no lumps and bumps means covered in dodgy lumps, horse advertised doesn't even exist (oh, I do have this other you might be interestted in - argh!)!! Etc, you get the idea! Unfortunatly even asking outright doesn't mean you get a truthful response, seems you just have to go and look, then walk away. I wouldn't have minded only, like tracey01, they were all at least 2 hrs away, some as many as 5hrs drive each way!! At least when you have a good one you don't have to look again for a while!

I went to see a horse a while ago. I asked loads of questions on the phone before traveling to see it. It sounded alright so I thought we'd go & see it. I arrived at the yard & walked straight past the horse as it looked nothing like the photo or description. I said to the seller that I'd asked loads of questions & clearly she hadn't answered truthfully. She told me that if she'd said everything about the horse I probably wouldn't have come to see it. I told her she was right & I wouldn't have come & now I'd spent time & money coming to see a horse that she knew wasn't what I was looking for & wasted my time. I was fuming. Some sellers must think people are idiots. :(

I agree, BUT it works both ways I am currently selling an amazing 16.2hh full up 5 year old green but very willing and hacking beautifully. Not for novice due to age and breed. However even after speaking with people on the phone have had one person turn up and when I rode her said oh shes very green I was hoping she would at least carry herself correctly. Then a complete novice who thought she evented but got on and didnt even know how to sit correctly or hold the reins, in my opinion people who do this are only putting themselves at risk, also got a ohhh didnt realise 16.2hh is that big!
I feel your pain but honest sellers seem to be getting it rough too!

I know, this happened to me too when I drove 2 hours to see a horse and knew within five minutes (less actually!) of seeing it that it was totally unsuitable and if they'd told me anything at all about it I wouldn't have bothered.

It wasn't like they had anything else to sell so there wasn't any reason for dragging me down when I'd gone to great lengths to explain exactly what I wanted (i.e. 15hh min, nice cob type, forward going but not scatty, good in traffic etc); and what I saw was a very green 14hh, only ever been driven - and on the continent at that!

This was a total waste of my time and two years on I'm still mad about it!!! Grrrrrgghhh!

I travelled from North Yorkshire to Surrey to see a horse which was advertised as a fantastic event horse, won Novice etc, so it was not cheap! Saw some videos and spoke for hours to the owner, to make sure it was worthwhile going to see it. Got there to find no one at the yard. Eventually after an hour the owner turned up. They then proceeded to pull out the poorest looking horse you have ever seen (a true rescue case) with only 2 shoes left on (which were dangling off the feet!). I asked if that horse was the fantastic event horse to be told yes but it was having a holiday. I said I wasn't interested, but the owner begged me to see it ridden at least. The owner rode it with 2 schooling whips, and spurs with rowels on, giving it a boot and a smack every stride as it was so reluctant to go forwards (not surprising as it was a bag of bones and obviously lame). At this point I told the owner the horse was lame, and in that state worthless. To which the owners reply was 'wait until you see it jump'. I told the owner I was leaving and if that horse was jumped I would be reporting them, and quickly left the yard.

i live in harrogate, north yorkshire and i went to stevenage which may i say is a 10hr drive round trip to see a gorgeous (on the pictures) palomino 16.2hh. the owner got on and had to kick the utter hell out of it to get it moving. i got on and it didnt move an inch and when i slapped it with a whip, it bucked and kicked my dad in the shin! then the woman came out with the old chestnut "its never done that before" B0LL0*KS! :D
i feel your pain ;)
