Just wanted some opinions on the Wintec kids saddle pretty please - I’ve had a look on previous posts but couldn’t find many reviews / a definitive answer to whether it is treeless or not.

Looking at the saddle for my new forest pony for ad-hoc, v infrequent walk rides with my niece and nephew. I am also pregnant and could hold onto it for testing the water with future spawn in a few years time…

Does this saddle sound like it could be suitable (will obviously make sure it’s comfy for pony too!)?IMG_4116.jpeg

Depends on size of pony, size of jockey and fit as to whether it’s suitable BUT unless a small pony and small child you’d be better off with a ‘properly’ fitted saddle.

I used a cheap cub saddle when they were tiny, after about 4 they rode in normal saddles, a suede Heather Moffet seat saver stops them sliding and a clip on grab handle. My eldest is hyper mobile and dyspraxic and has been fine with the above set-up.

I had an Inky Dinky saddle but I didn’t like it, never felt like it fitted anything very well.

I found the Wintec Kids to be far better made and better for both child and pony than any other cub saddle. We have sold on the little ponies now as outgrown, but I sourced a second hand one of these for each one to send with them, as my kids had loved our original one so much. It gave them a good position too.

We used it from age 2-4 (2-5 for my daughter) then graduated onto a Thorn pad.

yes, it's treeless with velcroed foam panels underneath. The panels have some adjustement to better fit the pony's back.
It's been a good saddle for us, well made and durable.

How about a felt saddle pad? I always think these rigid saddles make the child sit perched on top of the pony rather than on the pony, feeling the movement.

I was going to suggest the same...

OP, I have 2, both with a tuck taken on the belly strap but bigger one (a Willis pad) went on v tubby 12.2. I have them advertised on my faceache page if you were interested.

A lady on my yard has a cub saddle for her 11hh pony for her 2 year old. He literally walks round though on the lead rein, I think anyone older and I’d want a saddle fitted personally

I'm not the biggest fan, the panels etc aren't the best set up for a pony's back but they can work, especially with really tiny riders, maybe not so much the 4 year old. Definitely treeless.

I personally think Shetland pads are a last resort as they sit nearly all riders in a real chair seat (as there's nothing to lift them and let their legs drop more down than forwards). There are other options before getting to treed saddles, some of the really good treeless companies offer smaller options which would be better, imo, for the pony AND the rider.

Guy Cantin are nice little treeless saddles, and are that half way house (I'd avoid the treed ones full stop) but they do have a fixed arch at the front which is pretty narrow, so they're only suitable for narrower ponies and then, if the pony has a wither, will tip back in many cases. It may be possible to shim them, I've only seen one once and not worked with them so can't comment further.
