Hello all

HAPPY OLYMPICS!! I can't wait!!

I am looking for some ideas or advice. I have a little black labrador who is 9 weeks old today. I have had him for a week and he is super cute, but I don't know what to do about his routine. He is in a cage between midnight and 6 am, absolutely no longer than that. He is dry overnight but always ready to be out for a pee! However I'm a bit worried about his routine. He sleeps quite a lot of the day and then has a real energy burst in the evening. He then crashes and burns!! I have to wake him up about half 11 for his final walk before he goes in his cage, which by the time he has been out and had a pee and a poo he is then wide awake!! He then takes about 30 mins + to settle and sleep again. This is only my second puppy, so I am not hugely experienced. Do I just need to stick at it and be patient? I think I am just worried that he sleeps too long during the day and is awake during the night.

He sounds pretty normal to me, pups do need a lot of sleep, and like human babies they have an annoying habit of doing it during the day and then being raring to go when you are wanting to relax.:p
When you refer to his "walks" do you mean just toilet breaks in the garden? A pup of that age should not be going on proper walks at all. I would do one of two things, either wake him earlier than 11.30 pm to give him a bit of attention, nothing too exciting, maybe some very basic training - sit , down etc, or alternatively wake him at bed time, pop him outside for wee etc with minimum of fuss and then straight back into bed.
If you pm Cayla she will send you her puppy guide which is full of useful information and tips, and yes Cayla I am going to say it, in return a donation to adopt a dog is always appreciated .

I am remembering fondly one of our Lab puppies at home long ago who no matter what we did wanted to play at midnight, she did grow out of it eventully .
Just enjoy them a lab puppy is just the best thing.

Hello
Thank you for your advice. Yes I do mean just toilet stop pootles, not 'walks' in their proper sense! I will invesitigate the puppy guide! Thank you.
