Hi Everyone,

I decided to buy my enthusiastic six year old son his own pony. He always helps with mine, leads, grooms has a sit on lead rein. My daughter is nervous around horses and she is a small ten year old. She had her own pony about two years ago, didnt gel with it and didnt seem to like the care aspect either.

Our new pony is a teeny weeny 10.3hh Welsh Section A mare. Shes well put together good bone etc and my daughter has just fallen in love with her and I currently have them fighting over her!

I just wanted opinions on my daughter riding this pony, shes not fat or thin and she isnt a big ten year old. I dont really want to put her on the scales but I need to know what kind of upper weight limit is acceptable in this case. The pony has a deep heart girth and takes up the leg she didnt seem to struggle with her on board at all.

Any advice? Cuppa anyone?
 
I think if the pony is happy carrying her I wouldn't worry. I have a tiny fine boned falabella x welsh and he really is unhappy with anyone over around 4.5 stone on him. You can soon see if they struggle.
Lots of sec As are schooled by adults - a practice I disagree with, but I have seen them carrying 8 stone or more.

Thank you, Im not sure how tall my daughter is im 5'4 and the top of her head comes up to my collar bone, shes slim but not skinny. Im guessing 6 to 7 stones max.
 
Honestly, I would say stop worrying and enjoy your pony!
I've ridden ponys similar size this month and I'm 21 and not built like a rake(!) and I'm not short either...

Not saying I would do it every day, but your daughter will be absolutely fine. The only trouble with little ponies is its hard to get rising trot, because the legs go so fast, and she may end up feeling unbalanced- don't be tempted to hoik the stirrups up, to make the "picture" better- just embrace the fact your kid is happy and gaining confidence.
And pleeeease don't give her a complex about being too big. She might just be a bit tall- if she gets the bug it's the perfect excuse to go pony shopping in the spring :)
 
Thanks for the reply too, The pony seemed to be enjoying herself, I will just watch closely! Its just a massive pity shes fallen for this pony, I cant have three but she will need a bigger one soon enough, I didnt bargain for a pony kindling her interest like this!

Thats always the thing isnt it I dont want her to get on the scales shes sensitive and she isnt fat and I dont want her to worry about her weight and give her a complex, Im so grateful to this pony, its kind of a dream come true, she does seem to be managing rising trot fine so perhaps thats a good sign, Im just glad shes finding some confidence and interest. YAY!
 
Let her enjoy her :). I'm 5'2 and about 8 stone and regularly ride 11.2 welshies for people. The pony will let you know if she is struggling.

My daughter has a section a on loan who is just shy of 12hh daughter is tall and looks fine on him!
His trot is very bouncy and think this is the reason she prefers to trot on my 15.1hh cob! he has such a tiny stride :P
 
Another one who says stop worrying!! I have a 10.2hh Shetland for my 6 year old son, he's perfect height for him and I hope he lasts a good few more years til my son gets to 10....mind that would make Snowy 25 years old.... :)

Yes I think you are right I think she doesnt find her scary due to her being so small. Maybe thats all she needed all along.
 
obviously im very much too tall but until quite recently i used to work a couple of lead rein/first ridden ponies that were getting too sharp for the kids (and bored!), im 5'7, weigh 8 stone give or take,and the ponies were about 10.2hh and 11.2hh very dinky show ponies........ they didnt struggle to give me hell!
