Hello

I have always been fortunate to have horses with good feet. However current horse has got quite soft frogs and a bit prone to thrush.

Just wondering if anyone had tips to share for keeping thrush away and maintaining healthy feet?

I swear by Hydrogen Peroxide for thrush. It's brilliant. To maintain healthy feet, a good diet is important and speak to you farrier and see what he recommends. There are a lot of products on the market and he would be the person who will see the results.

With ours if they get a bit of thrush I just soak and scrub their feet in salt water. If it is worse then I use white lightening, dry after treatment (v imp as you don't want to trap damp in the trushy areas) and then slodge sudocreme all over. I don't like using hydrogen peroxide/hibiscrub or other harsh cleaners as you will find they kill off the 'good' bugs as well as the bad which just leaves you with a less healthy frog which is much more prone to thrush.

If your horse is prone to thrush it is worth looking at how he is shod/trimmed as contrated heels/high heels can lead to a deep central suculus which is a right b****r to get thrush out of. Working on widening the heels and strengthening the frog should help alot with keeping thrush at bay in the future.

We use Red Horse Products Field Paste and it works really well. All natural products and doesn't damage any healthy tissue. Our horses live out 24/7 and this stuff has been a great help keeping thrush at bay.

Have been told that cider vinigar can kill off the bacteria that cause thrush.
I cant speak from experience, but kind of makes sense to me as years ago when I was nursing, we used to use vinigar to heal wounds that were contaminated with certain bugs.
Worth a try though, and cant damage any healthy tissue, and perhaps much cheaper than any specific products.

Thank you all so much for your tips, I feel like a complete novice in this area and with so many products on the market for hooves, you wonder whose claims to believe.

I think I will speak to the farrier as well as I am sure he will have some good advice to.

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences, hopefully I will have a horse with happy hooves soon :)
