My gelding is having to wear a muzzle for the next 3 weeks. I have a dinky rugs muzzle for him and obviously don't want to buy anything different as its only for the short term.

What I am after are your tips and ideas to stop him removing it as I am sure he will try his best :/

Stick a headcollar on over the top, and I have to put electric tape on the Velcro fastenings too! My pony is a nightmare at getting his off or getting other ponies to remove it for him but this seems to do them job! Good luck!

When my pony used to wear one, I looped the muzzle strap through a headcollar and used a web browband to keep the whole lot together. Worked for a long time and never caused any injuries/problems.

I used to put a fly mask over the top but then he figured how to remove them both & always dumped them in the water trough ;) the only thing that worked for me was plaiting his forelock under & over the headpiece of the muzzle xx

I think if you make sure the throat lash part of the muzzle is actually in same place as it would be on a bridle and is tight that helps as well as making sure the headpiece is tight enough that they can't pull it over their ears easily. I put vet wrap round the velcro as well.

Thanks for the advice everyone. He wore it for two hours last night and he was desperately trying to eat through it but not having much luck. I could hear his teeth hitting each other with no food :(. I feel awful. He came in for the night and it is back on again now. So will see how it goes today. I can't really see how he can eat with it on but just gotta hope he can :( mean mummy time
