So I am doing my first ODE tomorrow. It's tiny heights, but that's not really the issue with my horse. If I'm not riding properly, he runs out. I tend to get ahead of the movement & as a result I tend to fall off. A lot. We had successful XC schooling last week but id like to get round without a run out. Any last minute tips for keeping him infront of my leg & me behind the movement so we finish on 4 legs not 6??

I always use the mantra 'don't take off until the horse does'

If they are really spooky whatsits, I also use 'hips before shoulders' when coming into fences to make sure I am as safe as possible.

Agree, don't jump before the horse! I think it's a horrible feeling being in front of the movement especially if the horse hesitates a bit, if I have a jump like that it quickly reminds me to wait!
Remember xc is not about being pretty but effective, look ahead and between the flags and not down at the fence otherwise you might tip forwards. You've got to be determined, imagine yourself flying round straight over eveything and you will, kick on! Best of luck :)

Good luck for tomorrow, all good advice, I tell my daughter to ride as though there is a drop on the landing side and try just to give with your hands :)

Sit back and ride the last 3 strides ,(all of them). All too often we let a game horse do the work and are surprised when he suddenly says "Help"
