I also agree, don't ever get off. I was always taught this when I was young and it just stuck, along with whatever happens do NOT let go of your reins. Nothing more annoying than having to go and fetch a horse that has galloped off without a rider.
I sing to mine when he doesn't like something or is unsure of himself. It seems to work on him if I start singing before approching the scary object. Some days he is just a twit though and can be scared of everything that he has been hacking past for the last 8 years.. Stupid horse.
